There are different terms for crocheting in British and American English. If this pattern includes crochet, click for "crochet terms" here.
Gauge: 21 sts x 28 rows in pattern = 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4").
Row 1: (Right side) * K 2, P 1, yo, P 2 tog, P1, K2 *, repeat from * - *.
Row 2: (Wrong side) * P 2, K 4, P 2 *, repeat from * - *.
Row 3: * K 2, P 1, P 2 tog, yo, P 1, K 2 *, repeat from * - *.
Row 4: * P 2, K 4, P 2 *, repeat from * - *.
Repeat these four rows for Pattern.
Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows.
Garter st, when knitting in the round:
*Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl.* Repeat from * - *.
Cast on 194 (210-226) sts and knit 2 rows garter st. Keep 1 st at each center front edge in garter st throughout, begin Pattern and place markers as follows: knit 49 (53-57) sts, place marker, knit 96 (104-112) sts, place marker, knit 49 (53-57) sts. Inc 1 st each side of markers 4 times every 10 (10-11) rows = 210 (226-242) sts. Knit the increased sts into the pattern as you go along. When the work measures 19 (19-20) cm [7.5" (7.5" - 7-7/8")], knit the next row as follows: 51 (55-59) sts for the front, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 100 (108-116) sts for the back, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 51 (55-59) sts for the front. Knit the rest of each part separately.
Front: 51 (55-59) sts. Bind off for armholes every other row 3 sts 1 (1-2) times, 2 sts 2 (3-3) times, 1 st 2 (4-5) times. When the work measures 24 (25-26) cm [9.5" (9-7/8" - 10.25")], dec for the front neck inside the 8 sts at the center front edge every other row: 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 6 times, then 1 st every 4th row 6 (7-7) times.
Make decreases as follows:
Dec 2 sts: after the 8 sts: K 3 tog; before the 8 sts: K 3 tog through the backs of the sts.
Dec 1 st: after the 8 sts: K 2 tog; before the 8 sts: K 2 tog in the back of the sts.
When both armhole and neck shaping are finished, 26 (25-25) sts remain on the needle . Bind off when the work measures 42 (43-44) cm [16.5" (16-7/8" - 17.25")].
Back: 100 (108-116) sts. Bind off for armholes as on the front. 82 (82-82) sts. When the work measures 40 (41-42) cm [15.75" (16-1/8" - 16.5")], bind off the center 26 (28-28) sts for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 42 (43-44) cm [16.5" (16-7/8" - 17.25")].
Sleeves: Cast on 48 (48-48) sts and knit 2 rows garter st. Begin Pattern and at the same time, when the work measures 5 cm [2"], inc 1 st each side 22 (23-24) times:
Sizes S + M: alternately every 4th and 5th row.
Size L: every 4th row.
= 92 (94-96) sts. Knit the increased sts into the Pattern as you go along. When the work measures 44 (44-43) cm [17.25" (17.25" - 16-7/8")], bind off for sleeve caps each side every other row 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 12 (13-16) times, 3 sts 2 times. Bind off. The work measures approx. 55 (56-57) cm [21-5/8" (22" - 22.5")].
Assembly: Sew shoulder seams.
Lace Border: Cast on 13 sts and knit 1 row. Continue with pattern as follows:
Row 1: (wrong side) and all odd-numbered rows: K 2, purl until 2 sts remain, K 2.
Row 2: (right side) slip 1, K 3, yo , K 5, yo, K 2 tog, yo , K 2 (15 sts).
Row 4: slip 1, K 4, slip 1, K 2 tog, pass the slipped st over (psso), K 2, (yo, K 2 tog) 2 times, K 1 (13 sts).
Row 6: slip 1, K 3, slip 1, K 1, psso, K 2, (yo, K 2 tog) 2 times, K 1 (12 sts).
Row 8: slip 1, K 2, slip 1, K 1, psso, K 2, (yo , K 2 tog) 2 times, K 1 (11 sts).
Row 10: slip 1, K 1, slip 1, K 1, psso, K 2, (yo, K 2 tog) 2 times, K 1 (10 sts).
Row 12: K 1, slip 1, K 1, psso, K 2, yo, K 1, yo, K 2 tog, yo, K 2 (11 sts).
Row 14: slip 1, (K 3, yo) 2 times, K 2 tog, yo, K 2 (13 sts).
Repeat Rows 1-14.
Bind off when the Lace Border measures approx. 92 (100-106) cm [36.25" (39-3/8" - 41.75")], adjusting for complete pattern and to fit body. It is important not to knit the border too long. Sew the border onto the lower edge of the body. Pick up approx. 250-270 sts along both front pieces and around the neck on circular needles and knit 4 rows garter st and at the same time, make 6 buttonholes on the right front evenly distributed from the beginning of the neck shaping to the bottom edge. (1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row.) Sew sleeve seams.
Crochet borders: Crochet a border along the border at the lower edge of the body and on the sleeves as follows: * 2 single crochet (sc), ch 3, 1 sc in the 1st ch st *, repeat from * - *. Sew on the sleeves and buttons.
