Gauge: 24 sts x 32 rows in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm.

Rib: * K 2, P 3 *, repeat from * - *.

Pattern: See the chart. The pattern is seen from the right side.

Right mitten:
Loosely cast on 60 sts on double-pointed needles; join and knit 2 rows stockinette st. Then knit rib – see instructions above.
When the piece measures 10 cm dec every other P 3 to P 2.
When the piece measures 14 cm dec the remaining P 3 to P 2 = 48 sts.
When the piece measures 16 cm knit Pattern 1 – see that the pattern starts with P over K and K over P on the rib.
After 2 rows of Pattern 1 inc for thumb each side of 3rd and 4th sts at start of row (= 2 inc sts). Inc every other row a total of 6 times = 14 thumb sts – knit the increased sts in the pattern as you go along.
When the piece measures 21 cm put these 14 sts on a st holder. On the next row cast on 2 new sts over sts on st holder = 48 sts, continue Pattern 1 as before.
When the piece measures 25 cm – adjust to end after an entire square – knit Pattern 2 over all sts (be sure that the pattern starts with K over P and P over K as in chart).
When the piece measures 28 cm bind off all sts in rib.

Thumb: Put the 14 sts from st holder on needles and pick up 6 sts in back of these sts = 20 sts.
Divide the sts on 3 double-pointed needles and knit Pattern 2 for approx. 2 cm, bind off in rib.
Knit a second mitten, reversing all shaping.
