NOTE: This pattern is written in American English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inches - click here. Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows on larger needle in pattern = 10 x 10 cm (4» x 4»)

Pattern: See chart (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st.

Border: Knit 3 cm (1.25») stockinette st, purl 1 row (= folding row – measure the work from here), knit 3 cm (1.25») stockinette st.

Body: The cardigan is worked in the round after the border. Armhole and the center front steeks are cut after the body is complete. Cast on 234 (250-266) sts on smaller circular needles with pink and knit Border (as above). Change to larger circular needles. Cast on 5 sts for the center front steek and join. Knit Pattern 1 after the 5 steek sts, increasing 6 sts evenly distributed on the first row = 240 (256-272) + 5 sts for steek = 245 (261, 277) sts. (The 5 steek sts at the center front are not knit in pattern.) After Pattern 1 work Pattern 2 and repeat until the work measures 51 (52-53) cm (20» (20.5», 20-7/8»). When the piece measures 30 (31-31) cm (11.75» (12.25», 12.25»), work the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 60 (64-68) sts for the front, cast on 4 sts for armhole steek (which are not knit in pattern), 120 (128-136) sts for the back, cast on 4 sts for the armhole steek (which are not knit into pattern), 60 (64-68) sts for the front.
When the work measures 47 (48-49) cm (18.5» (18-7/8», 19.25») bind off 7 (8, 8) sts each side of the 5 steek sts + the 5 steek sts (total of 19 (21, 21) sts bound off). Work the rest of the body back and forth on the needle. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 3 times, dec 1 st 3 times. When the work measures 51 (52-53) cm (20» (20.5», 20-7/8») finish Pattern 2 (adjust for pattern) and knit Pattern 3 to finished dimensions. When the work measures 53 (54-55) cm (20-7/8» (21.25», 21-5/8») bind off the center back 40 (42-42) sts for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts at each back neck edge on the next row. Bind off all sts when the work measures 55 (56-57) cm (21-5/8» (22», 22-3/8») and Pattern 3 is complete.

Sleeves: Cast on 50 (50-52) sts on smaller double pointed needles with pink and knit Border. Change to larger needles; join and place a marker at the join. Begin Pattern 4, increasing 6 (8-6) sts evenly distributed on the first row = 56 (58-58) sts. After Pattern 4, knit Pattern 2 and repeat throughout sleeve. At the same time inc 1 st each side of marker 30 (29-31) times, alternately every 3rd and 4th row = 116 (116-120) sts. When the work measures 47 (46-46) cm (18.5» (18-1/8», 18-1/8»), put the 4 sts on each side of the marker on a stitch holder and work the rest of the sleeve back and forth on the needle. Then put 8 (8-9) sts from each side edge on a stitch holder for sleeve caps every other row 4 times. The work measures 50 (49-49) cm (19.75» (19.25», 19.25»). Put all sts on the same circular needles again. Knit 2 cm (0.75») reverse stockinette st for the seam allowance over the cut edge on the body. Bind off loosely.

Assembly: Sew a marker down through the steek sts on either side and at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker, 1st seam = 1/2 stitch from the marker, 2nd seam = 1/2 stitch from the first seam. Cut for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up 108-112 sts along the left front on smaller needle with pink and knit Border, bind off all sts. Repeat along right front, but after 1 cm (3/8») make 5 buttonholes evenly distributed on the row (1 buttonhole = bind off 3 sts and cast on 3 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row.) Make matching buttonholes on the folding edge).

Pick up 125-130 sts around the neck on smaller needle with pink and knit 2 cm (0.75») stockinette st, change to orange and knit 1 row stockinette st, purl 1 row for the folding edge, knit 1 row stockinette st, change back to pink and knit 2 cm (0.75») stockinette st, bind off all sts. Fold all edges over double against the wrong side and sew.
Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of knitting on the sleeve before the reverse stockinette seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine stitch. Turn the cardigan inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut edge on the body by hand. Sew on buttons.
