Gauge: 17 sts x 22 rows in stockinette st on larger needles = 10 x 10 cm (4» x 4»).

Pattern: See chart(1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side.

Seed st (on an uneven number of stitches): All rows: K 1 *P 1, K 1*
Seed st (on an even number of stitches): Row 1: *K 1, P 1*; Row 2: * P 1, K 1 *

Rib: 3 sts seed st, *3 sts stockinette st, 3 sts seed st*, repeat from *-*.

Cast on 197 (221) sts on smaller needles and knit rib pattern for 5 cm [2»], beginning with 1 edge st which is knit in garter st throughout, then start rib pattern with 3 sts seed st, end row with 1 edge st which is knit in garter st throughout.
Change to larger needles, increasing 5 (1) sts evenly distributed on the first row = 202 (222) sts, and knit Pattern 1.
Change to Pattern 2 and work until the work measures 45 (49) cm (17.75» (19.5»)). Work the next row as follows: 49 (54) sts for the front, bind off 4 sts for armholes, 96 (106) sts for the back, bind off 4 sts for armholes, 49 (54) sts for the front, staying in pattern. Knit the rest of each part separately.

Front: = 49 (54) sts. At armhole edge every other row, bind off 3 sts 1 (1) time, 2 sts 1 (2) times, dec 1 st 4 (5) times = 40 (42) sts.
Work in Pattern 2 until the work measures 52 (57) cm (20.5» (22.5»)) (adjust for pattern - finish with a whole or half repeat), then knit Pattern 3 and Pattern 4.
At the same time, when the piece measures 63 (68) cm (25» (27»)), bind off for the neck every other row: 4 (5) sts once, 3 sts once, 2 sts 2 times, dec 1 st 2 times.
Bind off all sts after Pattern 4 is complete.
The work measures 71 (76) cm (28» (30»)).

Back: = 96 (106) sts.
Shape armholes and keep in pattern to correspond to fronts = 78 (82) sts. When the work measures 69 (74) cm (27.5» (29.5»)) (note: it is important that 4-6 rows of Pattern 4 remain), bind off the center 20 (22) sts for the neck.
Then bind off 2 sts on each neck edge on the next row. Bind off all sts after Pattern 4 is complete.
The work measures 71 (76) cm (28» (30»)).

Sleeves: Cast on 42 (42) sts on smaller double pointed needles; join and place a marker at the join.
Knit rib for 5 cm (2»).
Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 4. Inc 1 st each side of marker every 3rd row 24 (25) times = 90 (92) sts. After Pattern 4 knit Pattern 5 for the remainder of the sleeve, centering the pattern on the sleeve.
When the work measures 44 (42.5) cm (17.5» (16.75»)), bind off 2 sts on each side of marker and knit the rest back and forth on the needles.
Then shape sleeve caps: bind off 3 sts at each side every other row 8 (11) times.
Bind off all sts. The work measures 53 (54) cm (21» (21.25»)).

Assembly: Sew shoulder seams.

Plackets: Pick up 117-129 sts (must be a multiple of 6 sts + 3 sts) on the inside of the edge sts along the left edge of the front on smaller needles and knit 3 cm (1.25») rib back and forth on the needles, beginning with 3 sts seed st at the bottom edge.
Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm (3/8») make 7 buttonholes evenly distributed on the row (1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row).

Neck band: Pick up 81-87 sts (multiple of 6 sts + 3 sts) around the neck and over the placket on smaller needle and knit rib for 1.5-2 cm (5/8» to 0.75»), beginning and ending the rib with 3 sts seed st, then purl 1 row (seen from the right side).
Bind off all sts.
Sew on sleeves and buttons.
