Pattern: See Chart below (1 chart equals 1 repeat of the pattern).
The pattern is knit entirely in stockinette stitch.

Body: Sweater is knit in the round on circular needles with steeks at the underarms.
Cast on 240 (264-276) sts on smaller circular needles with brown and join being careful not to twist the sts. Place marker at the join. Knit 5 cm [2"] in stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here. Knit 1 repeat of Pattern 1. Change to larger circular needles and knit Pattern 2 to finished dimensions.
When the work measures 31 (33-33) cm [12.25" (13"-13")] knit the next row as follows: Bind off 2 sts for armholes. Knit 116 (128-134) sts front, bind off 4 sts from armholes. Knit 116 (128-134) sts back, bind off 2 sts for armholes. Make sure that the Pattern is centered on both the front and the back.
On the next row cast on 5 sts at each armhole edge over the bound-off sts (these sts constitute the steek and are for cutting up afterwards. They are not knitted into the pattern). Bind off for armholes on either side of the 5 cutting-up sts on both sides on every row 1 stitch 2 (3-3) times; on every other row: 1 stitch 2 (3-3) times; and on every 4th row: 1 stitch 1 (2-1) times. 106 (112-120) sts remain on the front and on the back.
Continue to knit in Pattern until the work measures 50 (52-53) cm [19.75" (20.5" - 20 7/8")]. Bind off the middle 22 (24-24) sts in the front for the neck. Knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needle. Bind off for the neck on every other row as follows: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times, 1 stitch 3 times. Simultaneously, when the work measures 54 (56-57) cm [21.25" (21-7/8", 22.5")], bind off the middle 38 (40-40) sts in the back for the neck and then bind off 2 sts on either side on the next row for the neck. Bind off when the work measures approximately 56 (58-59) cm [22" (22-7/8" - 23.25")].

Sleeves: Cast on 48 (48-50) sts on smaller double pointed needles with brown and join making sure not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join. Knit 5 cm [2"] stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here. Knit Pattern 1. Change to larger double pointed needles and increase 4 sts evenly distributed on the 1st row. 52 (52-54) sts.
Knit Pattern 1 three times and increase 1 stitch on either side of the marker 32 (32-33) times on alternately every 3rd and 4th row. 116 (116-120) sts. After the third repeat of Pattern 1 begin Pattern 2 and continue up the length of the sleeve. Make sure that the pattern is centered on the sleeve.
When the work measures 47 (45-45) cm [18.5" (17.75" - 17.75")], put 4 sts (two sts on either side of the marker) onto a holder. Continue to place sts onto the holder at the underarm on every other row as follows: 4 sts 8 (10-10) times. The work measures approximately 53 (52-52) cm [20-7/8" (20.5" - 20.5")]. Put all the sleeve sts back on double pointed needles and knit 2 cm [0.75"] in reverse stockinette stitch. This will be for the sleeve the seam allowance. Bind off loosely.

Assembly: Sew a marker thread down the center of the steek sts of each armhole. Sew two machine seams on either side of the marker thread _ stitch from the center seam. Cut up the center seam for armholes. Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up approximately 110-120 sts around the neck on smaller double pointed needles with brown and knit 2 cm [0.75"] in stockinette stitch. Change to marine and knit 1 row stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row for folding edge. Knit 2.5 cm [1»] stockinette stitch. Bind off . Fold all edges over against the wrong side and sew into place.
Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of plain knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the steek edge on the body by hand.
