Gauge: 23 sts and 30 rows on US 4 needles and in pattern = 10 x 10 cm [4»x4»]

See chart for diagram. One chart equals one repeat of the pattern.

Border: Knit 4 cm [1.25»] in black in stockinette stitch. End with a wrong side row. Change to brown and purl 1 row (WS). The purl 1 row on RS for folding edge. Change to black and knit in stockinette stitch for 4 cm [1.25»].

Body: Knit the cardigan back and forth on circular needles. Cast on 270 (286-306) sts (includes 1 edge stitch on either side at the center front) on medium circular needles with black and knit 4 cm [1.25»] in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here.
Change to larger circular needles and knit pattern upwards as follows: 135 (143-153) sts of Pattern 1, 135 (143-153) sts of Pattern 2. Remember to twist the strands of yarn around each other when you change color at the center back).
When the work measures 47 (50-52) cm [18.5» (19.75» - 20.5»)], knit the next row as follows: 65 (69-74) sts front, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 128 (136-146) sts back, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 65 (69-74) sts front. Knit the rest of the front and back separately.

Front: 65 (69-74) sts front. Bind off for armholes on every other row: 3 sts 1 (2-3) times, 2 sts 3 (3-3) times, 1 stitch 4 (3-5) times. 52 (54-54) sts. When the work measures 51 (54-57) cm [20» (21.25» - 22.5»)], bind off for the neck on every other row: 1 stitch 8 times, then on every 4th row: 1 stitch 6 times and finally on every 6th row: 1 stitch 2 (3-3) times. Bind off when the work measures 74 (77-80) cm [29-1/8» (30-3/8» - 31.5»)].

Back: 128 (136-146) sts. Bind off for the armholes as on the front. 102 (106-106) sts. When the work measures 72 (75-78) cm [28.25» (29.5» - 30.75»)], bind off the center 26 (28-28) sts for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts on each side on the neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 74 (77-80) cm [29-1/8» (30-3/8» - 31.5»)].

Right sleeve: Cast on 50 (50-52) sts on medium double pointed needles with black. Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit 4 cm [1.25»] in stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here.
Change to larger circular needles and knit Pattern 4 upwards. Be certain to get a repeat directly centered on the sleeve. When the work measures 5 cm [2»], inc 1 st on either side of the marker 37 (37-39) times on alternately every 2nd and 3rd row. 124 (124-130) sts.
When the work measures 43 (42-41) cm [16-7/8» (16.5» - 16-1/8»)], bind off 3sts on either side of the marker and knit the rest back and forth on needle . Bind off for sleeve tops on either side on every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 10 (12-15) times, 3 sts 2 times. The work measures approximately 53 (53-54) cm [20-7/8» (20-7/8» - 21.25»)].

Left sleeve: Knit like the right, but with Pattern 3 instead of Pattern 4.

Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approximately 170-190 sts along the left front to the center back on smaller circular needles and knit Border, bind off. Repeat along right front, but after 1 cm [3/8»] knit 6 buttonholes evenly distributed from the start of the binding off for the neck and downwards. 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and increase 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row. Remember buttonholes on the folding edge.
Sew on the sleeves as follows: Sew the sleeve with a dark background onto the side of the body with a dark background, and sew the sleeve with a light background onto the side of the body with a light background. Fold all edges over against the wrong side and sew. Sew on the buttons.
