NOTE: This pattern is written in American English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inch - click here.
There are different terms for crocheting in British and American English. If this pattern includes crochet, click for "crochet terms" here.
Gauge: 23 sts and 30 rows on US 4 needles and in pattern = 10 x 10 cm [4»x4»]
Pattern:
See chart for diagram. One chart equals one repeat of the pattern.
Border: Knit 4 cm [1.25»] in black in stockinette stitch. End with a wrong side row. Change to brown and purl 1 row (WS). The purl 1 row on RS for folding edge. Change to black and knit in stockinette stitch for 4 cm [1.25»].
Body: Knit the cardigan back and forth on circular needles. Cast on 270 (286-306) sts (includes 1 edge stitch on either side at the center front) on medium circular needles with black and knit 4 cm [1.25»] in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here.
Change to larger circular needles and knit pattern upwards as follows: 135 (143-153) sts of Pattern 1, 135 (143-153) sts of Pattern 2. Remember to twist the strands of yarn around each other when you change color at the center back).
When the work measures 47 (50-52) cm [18.5» (19.75» - 20.5»)], knit the next row as follows: 65 (69-74) sts front, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 128 (136-146) sts back, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 65 (69-74) sts front. Knit the rest of the front and back separately.
Front: 65 (69-74) sts front. Bind off for armholes on every other row: 3 sts 1 (2-3) times, 2 sts 3 (3-3) times, 1 stitch 4 (3-5) times. 52 (54-54) sts. When the work measures 51 (54-57) cm [20» (21.25» - 22.5»)], bind off for the neck on every other row: 1 stitch 8 times, then on every 4th row: 1 stitch 6 times and finally on every 6th row: 1 stitch 2 (3-3) times. Bind off when the work measures 74 (77-80) cm [29-1/8» (30-3/8» - 31.5»)].
Back: 128 (136-146) sts. Bind off for the armholes as on the front. 102 (106-106) sts. When the work measures 72 (75-78) cm [28.25» (29.5» - 30.75»)], bind off the center 26 (28-28) sts for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts on each side on the neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 74 (77-80) cm [29-1/8» (30-3/8» - 31.5»)].
Right sleeve: Cast on 50 (50-52) sts on medium double pointed needles with black. Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit 4 cm [1.25»] in stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row for folding edge. Measure the work from here.
Change to larger circular needles and knit Pattern 4 upwards. Be certain to get a repeat directly centered on the sleeve. When the work measures 5 cm [2»], inc 1 st on either side of the marker 37 (37-39) times on alternately every 2nd and 3rd row. 124 (124-130) sts.
When the work measures 43 (42-41) cm [16-7/8» (16.5» - 16-1/8»)], bind off 3sts on either side of the marker and knit the rest back and forth on needle . Bind off for sleeve tops on either side on every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 10 (12-15) times, 3 sts 2 times. The work measures approximately 53 (53-54) cm [20-7/8» (20-7/8» - 21.25»)].
Left sleeve: Knit like the right, but with Pattern 3 instead of Pattern 4.
Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approximately 170-190 sts along the left front to the center back on smaller circular needles and knit Border, bind off. Repeat along right front, but after 1 cm [3/8»] knit 6 buttonholes evenly distributed from the start of the binding off for the neck and downwards. 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and increase 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row. Remember buttonholes on the folding edge.
Sew on the sleeves as follows: Sew the sleeve with a dark background onto the side of the body with a dark background, and sew the sleeve with a light background onto the side of the body with a light background. Fold all edges over against the wrong side and sew. Sew on the buttons.

All patterns are carefully reviewed, but we must make reservation for possible mistakes. All patterns are translated from Norwegian and you can always check the original pattern for measurements and calculations. Go to original pattern for design DROPS 54-19. If you think you have found an error in the pattern, please post your remark or question in our Comments section.
