BODY
Knit the cardigan in the round after the border with steeks for armholes and at the center front.
Cast on 134-146-158 (182-194-206) sts (includes 2 edge sts) on smaller circular needles with yellow. Knit rib for 2 cm [0.75"] back and forth on the needles. Change to larger circular needles and cast on 3 sts at the center front. (These 3 sts plus the 2 edge sts constitute the steek and are not knit into the pattern.) Join and knit Pattern 1. After Pattern 1 knit the rest with Pattern 2.
When the work measures 18-19-22 (25-25-27) cm [7" - 7.5" - 8-5/8" (9-7/8" - 9-7/8" - 10-5/8")], knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 33-36-39 (45-48-51) sts for the front, cast on 5 sts (for underarm steek sts which are not knit into the pattern), 66-72-78 (90-96-102) sts for the back, cast on 5 sts (for underarm steek sts which are not knit into the pattern), 33-36-39 (45-48-51) sts for the front.
When the work measures 23-25-29 (33-36-39) cm [9" - 9-7/8" - 11-3/8" (13" - 14-1/8" - 15-3/8")], bind off the center 6-8-10 (14-18-20) sts + 5 steek sts in the front for the neck and knit the rest back and forth on the needles. Bind off for the neck every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 1 time. At the same time, when the work measures 26-28-32 (36-39-42) cm [10.25" - 11" - 12-5/8" (14-1/8" - 15-3/8" - 16.5")], bind off the center 20-22-24 (28-32-34) sts for the back neck. Bind off 2 sts at each back neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 28-30-34 (38-41-44) cm [11" - 11.75" - 13-3/8" (15" - 16-1/8" - 17-3/8")], adjusting for complete pattern if necessary.

Sleeves: Cast on 38-40-40 (42-42-44) sts on smaller double pointed needles with yellow. Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit rib for 2 cm [0.75"] and at the same time inc 2-4-6 (6-6-8) sts evenly distributed on the last row. 40-44-46 (48-48-52) sts. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 3 and then knit the rest with Pattern 4 (see instructions above) and at the same time inc 1 st on each side of the marker 4-4-6 (7-14-15) times:
Size 1/3 months: every 5th row.
Size 6/9 months: alternately every 8th and 9th row.
Size 12/18 months: alternately every 6th and 7th row.
Size 2 years: every 6th row.
Sizes 3/4 + 5/6 years: every 4th row.
= 48-52-58 (62-76-82) sts. When the work measures 10-14-16 (17-21-25) cm [4" - 5.5" - 6.25" (6.75" - 8.25" - 9-7/8")], put 2 sts on each side of the marker on a holder for sleeve top. Continue to knit back and forth on the needles and at the same time put sts on the holder on each side every other row: 4-4-4 (5-6-6) sts 4 times. The work measures approximately 13-17-19 (20-24-28) cm [5-1/8" - 6.75" - 7.5" (7-7/8" - 9.5" - 11")]. Put all sts from the holder back on the double pointed needles; join and knit over all sts 2 cm [0.75"] reverse stockinette st with red for a seam allowance over the cut steek edge on the body. Bind off.

Assembly: Sew a marker down into the center of the increased sts on each side and at the center of the front. Sew two machine seams around the marker 1/2 stitch to either side. Cut up for armholes and at the center of the front. Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up approx. 60-65-75 (85-90-100) sts along the left front on smaller needles with yellow and knit Border back and forth on the needles. Repeat along the right front, but after 0.5 cm [0.25"] make 5-5-5 (6-6-6) buttonholes evenly distributed on the row. (1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row.) Place the top buttonhole 2 sts from the edge, the bottom buttonhole 1 cm [3/8"] from the edge (remember to make corresponding buttonholes on the folding edge).
Pick up approx. 90-100 sts around the neck on smaller needles with yellow and knit 1 row stockinette st and then Pattern 5. Change to red and knit 1 row, purl 1 row (for folding edge), knit 5 rows red. Bind off.

Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of plain knitting on the sleeve before the sewing-allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut steek edge on the body by hand. Sew on the buttons.
