Knitting tension: 20 sts x 39 rows on needles size 4.5 mm with Cotton Frisé in garter sts = 10 x 10 cm.
Garter sts (back and forth on needle): Knit all rows.
Pattern: See diagram M.1 and M.2. The diagram shows the pattern from the RS. 1 repeat of M.1 = approx. 3 cm in the height.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Back and front piece:
The cardigan is knitted back and forth on circular needles from mid front.
Cast on 118-127-145-163 sts (incl 5 front band sts each side towards mid front) on circular needle size 4 mm with 2 threads of Muskat. Remove 1 thread and continue with M.1, but the 5 front band sts each side are knitted in garter sts throughout. After M.1 is completed put the 5 front band sts each side on a thread (these sts are knitted later for the front band). Change to circular needles size 4.5mm and Cotton Frisé. Continue in garter sts but at the same time cast on 1 new st each side mid front (= edge st) and dec 8-5-7-9 sts evenly distributed = 102-114-130-146 sts. Remember the knitting tension! When the piece measures 16-17-20-22 cm knit the next row as follows: 23-26-30-34 sts = right front piece, cast off 6 sts for armhole, knit 44-50-58-66 sts = back piece, cast off 6 sts for armhole, knit 23-26-30-34 sts = left front piece. Put the piece aside and knit the sleeves
Sleeves: Cast on 32-34-36-38 sts (incl 1 edge st each side) on needle size 4 mm with 1 thread of Muskat. Knit 2 rows of garter sts and then M.2 1 time – do not include the edge sts in the pattern. After M.2 change to needles size 4.5 and Cotton Frisé, and finish the sleeve in garter sts. At the same time when the piece measures 5 cm inc 1 st each side on every 2 cm a total of 5-6-7-8 times = 42-46-50-54 sts. When the piece measures 15-17-19-23 cm cast off 4 sts each side = 34-38-42-46 sts left on row. Knit the other sleeve.
Yoke: Put the sleeves on the same circular needle as the front and back piece where you cast off for armholes = 158-178-202-226 sts. Continue with Cotton Frisé. At the same time after 4 rows of garter sts dec 12-14-15-17 sts evenly distributed on every 6th row a total of 7-7-8-8 times (all dec are done from the RS as follows: K2 tog.) At the same time when the piece measures 23-25-28-31 cm cast off 6 sts each side mid front for neck. Continue to cast off 1 st towards the neck each side on every other row a total of 4-4-5-6 times. When the piece measures 27-29-33-36 cm dec 22-24-22-26 sts evenly distributed on row = 32-36-38-40 sts. Put remaining sts on a thread.
Front band: Put the 5 sts from the thread at left front band on a pointed needle size 4 mm. Knit in garter sts with Muskat until the band is approx 1 cm shorter than the front piece up to the neckline (the band should be stretched slightly when sewn to the front piece) – Put the sts back on a thread. Repeat for the right front band, but at the same time cast off for button holes.
1 button hole = cast off the centre st. On the returning row make a yo over the cast off st.
Cast off for button holes when the band measures:
Size 1/3 month: 5, 10, 15 and 20 cm
Size 6/9 month: 6, 11, 16 and 21 cm
Size 12/18 month: 6, 12, 18 and 24 cm
Size 24 month: 6, 13, 20 and 27 cm
NB: Cast off for 1 buttonhole at the neck edge too.
Assembly: Place the front band over the edge of the cardigan with 1 st from the front band over 1 st from the front piece and sew from the RS with small invisible sts – the band should be slightly stretched.
Collar: Put sts from the thread + the sts from the front band on a circular needle size 4 mm and pick up an additional 10 to 14 sts each side of the neckline at the front with Muskat = 62 to 78 sts (divisible with 2). Knit in M.2 but knit the band sts in garter sts throughout – at the same time after 2 rows cast off for the last button hole in line with the other buttonholes. After M.2 cast off. Sew the sleeves and the opening under the sleeves. Sew on the buttons.
