This is probably a silly question (I’m a beginner) but “Turn and work 1 dc in the 4th ch from hook, and then 1 dc in each of the last 2 ch = 4 dc.“ makes no sense to me... if I do 1 dc I 3 chains I get 3 dc and not 4...what am I missing?

Dear Pari, the first 3 chains will count here as first dc, this means you will work: 1 dc in 4th ch from hook (= first 3 chains = first dc) = there are now 2 dc, 1 dc in each of the last 2 chains = 2 dc = there are now 4 dc, you worked 3 chains to turn with and replace first dc and then 3 dc. Hope this is clear enough. Happy crocheting!

Indeed =) Had already ripped up just a small bit of work and ended up following the tip - was afraid that the item would buckle and not lie flat since it lacks flex on the sides without the crochet tip; the edges were progressing downward rather rapidly after a short while. Thanks again!

This is a beautiful pattern. I'm just starting this and need to double check - are we supposed to incorporate a turning chain for each row or is it purposely omitted from the instructions. Just not sure, hope this isn't a silly question.

Dear Gi87, see "Crochet tip" at the very beg of the pattern : "Replace first dc on every row with 4 ch and replace the last dc on row with 1 tr – to make the edge elastic. If edge is still too tight, replace first dc with 5 ch and last dc with 1 dtr." Happy crocheting!

Bon crochet !

Crochet tip: Replace first tr on every row with 4 ch and replace the last tr on row with 1 dtr – to make the edge elastic. If edge is still too tight, replace first tr with 5 ch and last tr with 1 ttr. Shawl: Worked from bottom point mid back. Crochet 6 ch (includes 3 ch to turn with) with crochet hook size 4.5 mm and 2 threads Alpaca. See Crochet tip! Turn and work 1 tr in the 4th ch from hook, and then 1 tr in each of the last 2 ch = 4 tr. Turn piece. Row 2: 2 tr in each tr = 8 tr. Now continue back an forth with 1 tr in each tr, but work 2 tr in the first 2 tr and the last 2 tr on every row (= 4 new tr per row). Remember the crochet tension! Continue to inc like this each side until shawl measures 40 cm mid back – there are now approx 160 tr on row. Border: Crochet a border round the whole shawl with 2 threads Alpaca and crochet hook size 4.5 mm as follows: Round 1: Crochet 1 tr, 1 ch, 1 tr and 1 ch in each dtr along the sides and in every other tr along the top. Round 2 and 3: Crochet 1 tr, 1 ch, 1 tr and 1 ch in each ch. Cut the thread and fasten. |
