I'm having trouble understanding this sentence "put sts on a thread from the bottom of the back piece towards the nape of the neck on every other row: 10 sts 2 times = 10-12-14-16-18 sts left on row.". Could you please elaborate? I understand it's a short row, but the "every other row" is confusing me. Towards which part are we adding stitches? Top? Center?

Dear Cristina, at the beginning of the row from back piece side, work the first 10 stitches and slip them on a thread, work to the end of the row, turn and work return row, repeat these 2 rows one more time = 10 sts are left on needle. Happy knitting!

I'm finding this pattern very difficult to understand and very confusing the way it is written. It just does not make any sense to me. I have tried over and over and I'm sick of ripping it apart and starting over. Can you do anything to make it more understandable?
31.08.2019 - 05:19DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Allard, you are working from one sleeve to the other, ie sideways, increasing first for sleeve, then you will cast off towards front piece and increase towards back piece, work short rows (= middle of piece) and now work reverse = increase towards front piece and decrease towards back piece, then decrease for sleeves. Happy knitting!

Del

Hej Gro.

DROPS Shrug in “Vienna” and “Cotton Viscose”
DROPS 97-21 |
|
Knitting Tension: 10sts x 12 rows on needles size 9 mm in Vienna and stocking sts = 10x10 cm. Garter sts: Knit on all rows Right side: Cast on 44-46-48-50-52 sts (incl. of 1 edge st each side) on needles size 5 mm with 2 threads of Cotton Viscose. Knit 4 rows of garter sts. Change to circular needles size 9 mm and 1 thread of Vienna and continue in stocking sts back and forth on needle. At the same time on the 1st row dec 18 sts evenly distributed on row = 26-28-30-32-34 sts. When the piece measures 17 cm inc 1 st each side on every 6-6.5-6.5-6.5-6.5 cm a total of 6 times = 38-40-42-44-46 sts. When the piece measures 51-52-53-53-53 cm insert a marking thread each side. Continue to measure from this point onwards! Then cast off at one side (= towards the front piece) at the same time casting on new sts on the other side ( = towards the back piece). Towards the front piece: Cast off 2 sts and continue to cast off on every 4th row: 2 sts 2 times and then on every other row: 1 st 1-2-3-2-3 times, 2 sts 1-1-1-2-2 times, 3 sts 2 times and 4 sts 1 time. Towards the back piece: Cast on on every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 3-3-4-4-4 times and 1 st 2-3-2-3-4 times. When all dec and inc are completed = 30-32-34-36-38 sts on row. When the piece measures 18-19-20-21-21 cm put sts on a thread from the bottom of the back piece towards the nape of the neck on every other row: 10 sts 2 times = 10-12-14-16-18 sts left on row. The shrug is knitted to the centre of the back = half way – insert a marking thread at the centre of the back piece in the nape of the neck. Continue the other half but reverse. When the last 10 sts have been put on a thread knit 1 row of stocking sts before putting the sts back on needle. Continue as follows on every other row: 10 sts 2 times = 30-32-34-36-38 sts. NB: When putting sts back on needle pick up an extra st in between the st on the thread and the 1st st on the needle. Knit the extra st tog with the 1st st from the thread. This is done to avoid a hole when putting sts back on needle. When the piece measures 4 cm from the marking thread at the nape of the neck inc towards the front piece ( = at the same side where you dec earlier) on every other row: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 1-1-1-2-2 times and 1 st 1-2-3-2-3 times and then on every 4th row: 2 sts 3 times. At the same time when the piece measures 12-11-12-12-11 cm from the marking thread in the nape of the neck (do not measure at the bottom of the back piece where the piece is narrower) cast off towards the back piece (= at the same side as inc earlier) on every other row: 1 st 2-3-2-3-4 times, 2 sts 3-3-4-4-4 times and 3 sts 1 time. When all inc and dec are completed = 38-40-42-44-46 sts on row. Insert 1 marking thread each side – all measures are done from this point onwards. When the piece measures 4-2.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 cm cast off 1 st each side on every 6-6.5-6.5-6.5-6.5 cm a total of 6 times= 26-28-30-32-34 sts. When the piece measures 50-51-52-52-52 cm change to needles size 5 mm and 2 threads of Cotton Viscose. Knit 4 rows of garter sts at the same time inc 18 sts on the 1st row evenly distributed = 44-46-48-50-52 sts. Cast off. Assembly: Sew the sleeve seam inside the 1 edge st up to the marking threads. Pick up along the opening of the shrug – this means along the right front piece, up towards the nape of the neck, down along the left front piece and around towards the back piece = approx. 105 to 125 sts (divisible with 5) on circular needles size 9 mm with 1 thread of Vienna and 1 thread of Cotton Viscose. Knit rounds as follows (seen from the right side): P 1 round and K 1 round, then knit in Rib K3, P2. When the edge measures 5 cm inc all P2 to P3 = approx. 126-150 sts. When the edge measures 10 cm inc all P3 to P 4 = approx. 147-175 sts. When the edge measures 15 cm cast off loosely with K over K and P over P. Crochet edge: Crochet an edge with hook size 5 and 2 threads of Cotton Viscose around the bottom of the sleeves and around the Rib as follows: *1 dc, 2 ch, skip 1 cm*, repeat from *-* and finish with 1 sl st in the 1st dc. |
