The piece is worked back and forth, top down. Start with powder 28 (color a) and hook size US 6 and work according to diagram A.1.

Here’s a more detailed description of how to start with Clue #1.
START: Work 5 chain stitches and make a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch made.
ROW 1: Work according to diagram A.1. Start the row at the star marked in red. Work 7 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around the chain stitch ring, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around the same chain stitch ring, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around the same chain stitch ring, 3 chain stitches and end row with 1 treble crochet, turn work.
ROW 2: Work according to diagram A.1.
ROW 3: Work according to diagram A.1 (Increase 1 chain stitch space around the chain stitch space marked with a small circle on this round).
ROW 4: Work according to diagram A.1.
