We will work from row 5 to row 8 in this clue.
When the diagram has been worked in height, row has 17 chain stitch spaces. The piece measures approx. 4” between the first chain stitch ring and the midmost chain stitch space on row 8.

Here’s a more detailed description of how to start with Clue #2.
ROW 1:
Work according to diagram A.2a as follows: 7 chain stitches, 1 double crochet around 1st chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around the same chain stitch space – marked with a small circle.
Then work according to diagram A.2b as follows: 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches.
Now work according to diagram A.2c as follows: 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around the same chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around next chain stitch space, 3 chain stitches and 1 treble crochet around the last chain stitch space, turn work.
ROW 2: Work according to diagram A.2c, A.2b and A.2a.
ROW 3: Work according to diagram A.2a, A.2b and A.2c.
ROW 4: Work according to diagram A.2c, A.2b and A.2a.
