Kun virkkaat raitoja, tai kun haluat vaihtaa väriä, tee näin: Kun virkkaat vanhan värin viimeisen silmukan, jätä viimeinen läpiveto vielä tekemättä. Tee uudella värillä langankierto ja vedä lanka viimeisen silmukan läpi. Kiristä edellisen värin lanka. Käänny 1 ketjusilmukalla ja jatka virkkaamista uudella värillä. Mikäli raidat ovat leveitä, kierrä uusi väri vanhan värin ympäri, ja anna langan kulkea työn mukana (reunassa) kunnes tarvitset sen uudestaan. Mikäli teet jakun, lanka kulkee sivusauman sisäpuolella. Jos teet patalapun, voit virkata patalapun ympäri peittävän reunuksen.
