European shoulder (neck)

In this lesson we show you how to pick up stitches for the neck. We follow the pattern for a children’s jumper Sweet Peppermint (DROPS Children 47-12) in size 2 years, but remember to follow the stitch numbers/increases for your chosen size!

At the bottom of the page you'll find a video which might be of help. as well as a form where you can ask our experts for help if you were to need it!

Let’s get started!

In this lesson, we are working with 2 yarn qualities, DROPS Lima colour no. 9029, sage green and DROPS Kid-Silk colour no 45, soft mint, using needle size 5 mm. We are using 1 strand of each quality, or the yarn and stitch number given in the pattern you are working on.

Using a knitting needle or crochet hook, start on one shoulder-line and knit up from the right side, inside 1 edge stitch, approx. 68 stitches around the neck. The stitch count should be divisible by 2, for a rib of knit 1, purl 1, or divisible by 4 for a rib of knit 2, purl 2. We show a rib of knit 2, purl 2.

Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2 or knit 1, purl 1) to the length specified in your pattern. Cast off a little loosely. We have chosen to work a double neck and have cast off with rib.

Fold the neck double to the inside and fasten with a couple of stitches.

Fasten all strands.

The jumper is finished!
