Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows on larger needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm [4»x4»].

Pattern: See chart. The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch.

Border 1: Knit 3 cm [1.25»] green stockinette stitch, change to marine, knit 1 row, purl 1 row (for folding edge. Measure the work from here), knit 1 row, change to green, knit 3 cm [1.25"] in stockinette stitch.

Border 2: Knit 3 cm [1.25»] marine stockinette stitch, purl 1 row, knit 3 cm [1.25"] stockinette stitch.

Body: Cardigan is knit in the round after the Border and cut steeks for the center front and armholes. Cast on 241 (261-281) sts on smaller circular needles with green and knit Border 1 back and forth on the needles. Change to larger circular needles and cast on 5 sts at the center front for the steek. (These sts are not knit into the pattern). Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Knit stockinette stitch.
When the work measures 12 (13-14) cm [4.75" (5-1/8" - 5.5")] knit Pattern 1 once then repeat Pattern 2 to finished dimensions. At the same time, when the work measures 35 (38-42) cm [13.75" (15" - 16.5")], knit the next row as follows: 5 front steek sts, 60 (65-70) sts for the front, cast on 5 sts for armhole steek, 121 (131-141) sts for the back, cast on 5 sts for armhole steek, 60 (65-70) sts for the front (the steek sts are not knitted into the pattern).
When the work measures 50 (54-58) cm [19.75" (21.25" - 22-7/8")], bind off the center front 16 (18-18) sts (+ 5 steek sts) for the neck and knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needles. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 2 times.
When the work measures 56 (60-64) cm [22» (23-5/8" - 25.25")], bind off the center back 31 (33-33) sts for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each back neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 58 (62-66) cm [22-7/8" (24-3/8" - 26»)].

Sleeves: Cast on 52 (56-58) sts on smaller double pointed needles with green. Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit Border 1. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit stockinette stitch.
When the work measures 5 cm [2»], inc 1 st on each side of the marker 27 (27-26) times every 4th row. 106 (110-110) sts. At the same time, when the work measures 11 (12-13) cm [4-3/8" (4.75" - 5-1/8")], knit Pattern 3 once, then knit the rest with marine.
When the work measures 46 (45-43) cm 181 /8» (17.75" - 16-7/8")], put 5 sts on each side of the marker on a stitch holder and continue by knitting back and forth on the needles. Put sts on the stitch holder for sleeve caps on each side of the work every other row: 2 sts 5 times. The work measures approximately 49 (48-46) cm [19.25" (18-7/8" - 181 /8»)]. Then put all the sts from the stitch holder back on the same circular needles and knit 2 cm [3/4»] reverse stockinette stitch for a seam allowance over the cut edge on the body. Bind off.

Assembly: Sew a marker in the center of the steek sts on either side and at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker, 1st seam = 1/2 st from the marker, 2nd seam = 1/2 st from first seam. Cut steeks for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up approximately 120 sts along the left front on smaller circular needles with marine and knit Border 2 back and forth on the needles. Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm [3/8»] make 6 buttonholes evenly distributed on the placket. (1 buttonhole = bind off 3 sts and cast on 3 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row.) Fold all edges over against the wrong side and sew.
Pick up approximately 130 sts with around the neck and over the placket on smaller circular needles with marine and knit Border 1 back and forth on the needles, but for 2 cm [3/4»] instead of 3 cm [1.25"]. Bind off. Fold over against the wrong side and sew.
Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut edge on the body by hand. Sew on the buttons.
