Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows on larger needles in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].

Pattern: See chart (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st.

Border: With flint, knit 3 cm [1.25"] stockinette st, then with right side facing purl 1 row (for the folding edge - measure the work from here), knit 1 row, change to natural white, 6 rows stockinette st.

Body: The cardigan is knit in the round after the Border up to the armholes with a steek at the center front.
Cast on 252 (270-288) sts on smaller circular needles with flint and knit Border back and forth on the needles. Change to larger circular needles, inc 5 sts at the center front (for the steek -- not knit into Pattern) and join the work. Knit Pattern 1 once, then repeat Pattern 2. When the work measures 45 (49-51) cm [17.75" (19.25" - 20")], knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 60 (64-69) sts for the front, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 120 (130-138) sts for the back, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 60 (64-69) sts for the front. Knit the rest of each part separately.

Front: = 125 (133-143) sts (including 5 steek sts). Bind off for armholes at each side every other row: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 (2-2) times, 1 st 2 (4-3) times = 103 (103-115) sts. When the work measures 59 (63-66) cm [23.25" (24.75" - 26")] bind off the center 12 (10-16) sts (+ the 5 steek sts) at the center front for the neck. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 2 times. Bind off when the work measures 68 (72-75) cm [26.75" (28.25" - 29.5")].

Back: = 120 (130-138) sts. Bind off for armholes as on the front = 98 (100-110) sts. When the work measures 66 (70-73) cm [26" (27-5/8" - 28.75")] bind off the center 32 (32-36) sts for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 68 (72-75) cm [26.75" (28.25" - 29.5")].

Right sleeve: Cast on 72 (72-72) sts on smaller double pointed needles with flint; join and place a marker at the join. Knit Border. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 3, then knit the rest with natural white and stockinette st. After Pattern 3 inc 1 st each side of marker 17 (17-19) times:
Sizes S/M+M/L: alternately every 3rd and 4th row
Size XL: every 3rd row
= 106 (106-110) sts. When the work measures 45 (44-43) cm [17.75" (17.25" - 16-7/8") bind off 3 sts each side of marker, and knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needles. Bind off for sleeve caps at each side every other row: 3 sts 2 (1-1) times, 2 sts 10 (15-15) times, 3 sts 2 (1-1) times, bind off. The work measures approx. 54 (55-54) cm [21.25" (21-5/8" - 21.25")].

Left sleeve: Knit as for the right sleeve, but knit Pattern 4 instead of Pattern 3.

Assembly: Sew a marker thread into the center of the steek sts at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker thread, 1st seam = ½ st from the marker thread, 2nd seam = ½ st from the first seam. Cut steek sts.
Pick up approx. 135 (145-150) sts along the left front on smaller circular needles with natural white and knit 3.5 cm [1-3/8"] stockinette st, purl 1 row (= folding edge), 3.5 cm [1-3/8"] stockinette st, bind off.
Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm [3/8"] make 7 buttonholes evenly distributed on the needles - 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row. Make corresponding buttonholes on the facing.
Fold all edges over double against the wrong side and sew. Sew the shoulder seams. Pick up approx. 120-125 sts around the neck and over the button band on smaller circular needles natural white and knit stockinette st, but knit the edge st at each side in garter st throughout. At the same time, inc 1 st at each side of the st directly on top of the shoulder every other row. When the neck border measures 3.5 cm [1-3/8"] purl 1 row (= folding edge), change to flint and knit 3.5 cm [1-3/8"] stockinette st, decreasing 1 st at each side of the st directly on top of the shoulder every other row. Bind off and fold the edge over double against the wrong side and sew. Sew in the sleeves and buttons.
