INFORMATION FOR PATTERN:
GARTER STITCH (worked in the round):
1 ridge = 2 rounds. Knit 1 round and purl 1 round.
GARTER STITCH (back and forth):
1 ridge = knit 2 rows.
DECREASE TIP (applies to hat):
Decrease as follows after every marker thread: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 1 stitch decreased).
----------------------------------------------------------
HAT:
Piece is worked in the round on a short circular needle, work the short rows back and forth on circular needle before working in the round again, switch to double pointed needles when needed. Work entire hat in garter stitch, bottom up.
Cast on 52-56 stitches on circular needle size 8 mm / US 11 with Andes. Insert 1 marker at beginning of round = mid back. Work in GARTER STITCH in the round - see explanation above. REMEMBER THE GAUGE! When piece measures 4 cm / 1½'', work short rows back and forth as follows: Knit from right side until 7-8 stitches remain before marker mid back, turn piece, tighten yarn and knit from wrong side until 7-8 stitches remain before marker mid back. Turn piece, tighten yarn and knit from right side until 9-10 stitches remain before marker, turn piece, tighten yarn and knit from wrong side until 9-10 stitches remain before marker. Turn, tighten yarn and knit from right side until 11-12 stitches remain before marker, turn, tighten yarn and knit until 11-12 stitches remain before marker in the other side. Continue back and forth like this and turn when 2 stitches more remain for every turn until 6-8 stitches remain mid front. After last turn continue knitting from wrong side until marker mid back. Piece now measures approx. 4 cm / 1½'' mid back and 11 cm / 4½'' at the front. Turn piece to continue working in the round from right side.
Work next round as follows: * Knit 1, make 1 yarn over (tighten yarn somewhat to avoid loose yarn over) *, repeat from *-* the entire round.
Work next round as follows: * Purl 1, drop yarn over off the needle *, repeat from *-* the entire round. Then work in garter stitch in the round over all stitches.
When piece measures 22-23 cm / 8 3/4"-9'' from cast-on edge mid back (where piece is shortest), knit 1 round while decreasing 3-0 stitches evenly (knit approx. every 16th and 17th together in S/M) = 49-56 stitches. Now insert 7-8 marker threads in piece with 7-7 stitches between every marker thread. Continue with garter stitch and decrease 1 stitch at every marker thread on next round with knit – Read DECREASE TIP (= 7-8 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every other round 5 times in total in both sizes = 14-16 stitches remain on needles. On next round with knit, knit all stitches twisted together 2 by 2 = 7-8 stitches. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten.

What a brilliant pattern. I have a small head and very fine silky hair. Most hats I’ve made tend to keep falling over my face. This one however, despite feeling quite loose, stays in place because of its shaping. It’s really quite ingenious.
