Tips & Help

Thank you for choosing DROPS Design!

We do our best to make our patterns easy to follow.

For that purpose, each of our patterns has specific tutorial videos to help you, which you will find at the bottom of the page.

We have also step-by-step lessons to help you understand some of the techniques we use in our patterns. You'll find them here!

NOTE: This pattern is written in American English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from inches to cm - click here. There are different terms for crocheting in American and British English. If this pattern includes crochet, click for "crochet terms" here. For this pattern in British English, please click here.
INFORMATION FOR THE PATTERN:

RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked in the round):
1 ridge = 2 rounds. Knit 1 round and purl 1 round

PATTERN:
See diagram A.1. Choose diagram for your size. The whole diagram is worked in stockinette stitch apart from the color marked purl. The diagram shows all the rows in the pattern seen from the right side.

INCREASE TIP-1:
To work out how to increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 100 stitches) and divide by the number of increases to be made (e.g. 38) = 2.6. In this example increase after alternately every 2nd and 3rd stitch.

KNITTING TIP:
To avoid the knitting gauge becoming tighter when working pattern, it is important that the strands at the back of the piece do not pull. You can use a larger size needle when working pattern if this is a problem.

INCREASE TIP-2 (for sides of body):
All increases are made from right side!
Start 2 stitches before marker thread, make 1 yarn over, knit 4 (marker thread sits in middle of these 4 stitches) make 1 yarn over (= 2 stitches increased). On next round work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes.

DECREASE TIP (for mid under sleeve):
Start 3 stitches before marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits in middle of these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 2 stitches decreased).

----------------------------------------------------------

SWEATER:
The piece is worked in the round with circular needle, from mid back and top down. The sleeves are worked in the round with double pointed needles/short circular needle, top down.

YOKE:
Cast on 100-104-108-116-116-124 stitches with short circular needle size 3.5 mm / US 4 and gray. Knit 1 round. Work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 3 cm / 1''. Then knit 1 round where you increase 38-40-42-46-46-44 stitches evenly on round - read INCREASE TIP-1 = 138-144-150-162-162-168 stitches. Change to circular needle size 4 mm / US 6. Continue by working pattern in the round according to diagram A.1 (= 23-24-25-27-27-28 repeats of 6 stitches) - read PATTERN and KNITTING TIP above. REMEMBER THE GAUGE! Knit up to and including the round marked with a star in the diagram for your size, the piece should measure approx. 20-20-21-23-25-27 cm / 8"-8"-8 1/4"-9"-9 3/4"-10½'' (if it does not, continue with dark gray to right measurement). There are now 276-288-325-351-378-392 stitches on the needle. Work 1 round where you adjust the number of stitches to 272-288-328-352-372-396 stitches. Continue with dark gray to finished length.
The next round is worked as follows: Knit 38-39-45-49-53-58 stitches (= half back piece), place the next 60-66-74-78-80-82 stitches on a thread for sleeve, cast on 10-12-12-12-14-16 new stitches (= mid under sleeve), work 76-78-90-98-106-116 stitches (= front piece), place the next 60-66-74-78-80-82 stitches on a thread for sleeve, cast on 10-12-12-12-14-16 stitches (= mid under sleeve) and knit 38-39-45-49-53-58 stitches (= half back piece). Body and sleeves are finished separately. THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE!

BODY:
= 172-180-204-220-240-264 stitches. Insert 1 marker thread in each side, i.e. in the middle of the new stitches cast on under sleeve (= 86-90-102-110-120-132 stitches between marker threads). Allow the marker threads to follow your work onwards. Work stockinette stitch. When the piece measures 4 cm / 1½'' increase 2 stitches in each side - read INCREASE TIP-2. Increase in this way every 4½ cm / 1 3/4'' a total of 9 times in all sizes = 208-216-240-256-276-300 stitches. When the piece measures 41-43-44-44-44-44 cm / 16"-17"-17 1/4"-17 1/4"-17 1/4"-17 1/4'' knit 1 round where you increase 12-8-8-12-12-16 stitches evenly on round = 220-224-248-268-288-316 stitches. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm / US 4 and work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 3 cm / 1''. Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl - make sure the bind off edge is not tight.

SLEEVE:
Place the 60-66-74-78-80-82 stitches from the thread in the one side of the piece on double pointed needles/short circular needle size 4 mm / US 6 and in addition knit up 1 stitch in each of the 10-12-12-12-14-16 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 70-78-86-90-94-98 stitches on needle. Insert 1 marker thread at the beginning of the round (= mid under sleeve). Work stockinette stitch in the round. When the piece measures 2 cm / 3/4'' decrease 2 stitches mid under sleeve - read DECREASE TIP above. Decrease in this way every 3-2½-2-2-1½-1½ cm / 1 1/8"-7/8"-3/4"-3/4"-½"-½'' a total of 12-15-18-19-20-21 times = 46-48-50-52-54-56 stitches. When the sleeve measures 41-41-42-40-39-38 cm / 16"-16"-16½"-15 3/4"-15 1/4"-15'' (shorter measurements in larger sizes because of longer yoke) knit 1 round where you increase 2-4-2-4-2-4 stitches evenly on round = 48-52-52-56-56-60 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 3.5 mm / US 4 and work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 4 cm / 1½''. Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl.
