Tips & Help

Thank you for choosing DROPS Design!

We do our best to make our patterns easy to follow.

For that purpose, each of our patterns has specific tutorial videos to help you, which you will find at the bottom of the page.

We have also step-by-step lessons to help you understand some of the techniques we use in our patterns. You'll find them here!

NOTE: This pattern is written in British English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inches - click here. There are different terms for crocheting in British and American English. If this pattern includes crochet, click for "crochet terms" here. For this pattern in American English, please click here.
CROCHET INFO:
Each round with double crochets starts with 1 chain stitch and finishes with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch at the beginning of the round (the chain stitch does not replace the first double crochet).

INCREASE TIP - 1 (working out):
To work out how many stitches you need for the flower pot cover, you calculate as follows: Use a tape measure and measure the circumference of the flower pot (e.g. 46 cm). Multiply the circumference with the crochet tension divided by 10 (13 double crochets in width/10 = 1.3).
We then get 46 cm x 1.3 = 59.8. Round this up to whole stitches = 60 stitches.
Then you take away the number of stitches already on the piece (e.g. 48 stitches) from the 60 stitches = 12 stitches. Then work the increases evenly along the round – READ INCREASE TIP-2.

INCREASE TIP - 2 (evenly spaced):
To work out how to increase evenly along the round, count the total number of stitches (e.g. 48) and divide this number by the number of increases to be made (e.g. 4) = 12. In this example increase by working 2 double crochets in every 12th double crochet.

STRIPES (for the flower pot cover shown in picture):
ROUNDS 1-7: 2 strands off white.
ROUNDS 8-9: 1 strand off white and 1 strand light yellow (= 2 strands).
ROUNDS 10-12: 1 strand light yellow + 1 strand vanilla (= 2 strands).
ROUNDS 13-17: 1 strand vanilla + 1 strand strong yellow (= 2 strands).
ROUNDS 18-20: 2 strands strong yellow.
ROUNDS 21-22: 1 strand strong yellow + 1 strand orange (= 2 strands).

FLOWER POT COVER:
The flower pot cover is worked in the round, bottom up. First the bottom is worked, then you work up the sides of the pot and finally a finishing edge.

Work the bottom as follows:
Work 4 chain stitches with hook size 5.5 mm and 2 strands off white and form them to a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch.
ROUND 1: Work 6 double crochets around the chain-stitch ring – READ CROCHET INFO!
ROUND 2: Work 2 double crochets in each stitch = 12 double crochets.
ROUND 3: Work * 2 double crochets in the first/next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch *, repeat from *-* = 18 double crochets.
ROUND 4: Work * 2 double crochets in the first/next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches *, repeat from *-* = 24 double crochets.
ROUND 5: Work * 2 double crochets in the first/next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches *, repeat from *-* = 30 double crochets. REMEMBER THE CROCHET TENSION!
Continue with double crochets and increases in the same way by working 1 more double crochet between each increase on the round until the piece is big enough to cover the bottom of the pot it will be used for (the bottom of the flower pot cover in the picture is finished when there are 48 double crochets on the round).

Insert a marker in the last round worked. The piece is now measured from here!
Choose the alternative which fits best to the pot you are making a cover for and work STRIPES – see description above. NOTE: The stripes are described for the cover in the picture!

THE POT SLANTS OUTWARDS LIKE THE POT IN THE PICTURE (the circumference at the top of the pot is bigger than the circumference at the bottom):
Work 1 double crochet in each double crochet, AT THE SAME TIME measure the circumference of the pot approx. every 2 cm in height and increase stitches evenly along the round – READ INCREASE TIP-1 (working out) AND INCREASE TIP-2 (evenly spaced).
When the flower pot cover covers the whole pot, work 1 round where you adjust the number of stitches so that they are divisible by 4. This is done because each repeat of the finishing edge goes over 4 stitches.

THE POT GOES STRAIGHT UP (the circumference at the top of the pot is the same as the circumference at the bottom):
Work 1 double crochet in each double crochet so that the number of stitches is the same the whole way up. Adjust the height to fit the pot you are making the cover for. When the flower pot cover covers the whole pot, work 1 round where you adjust the number of stitches so that they are divisible by 4. This is done because each repeat of the finishing edge goes over 4 stitches.

FINISHING EDGE:
The edge is worked with 2 strands Paris (On the picture it has been worked with 1 strand strong yellow and + 1 strand orange).
Work 1 double crochet, * work 3 chain stitches, work 1 treble crochet in the double crochet, skip 3 double crochets from the previous round, work 1 double crochet in the next double crochet *, repeat from *-* the whole round but finish with 1 slip stitch in the first double crochet on the round. Cut and fasten the strands.
