Pattern instructions

Knitting tension: 24 sts x 32 rows in Camelia on needle size 3 mm and garter sts = 10 x 10 cm.
Rib: * K1, P1 *, repeat from *-*.
Garter st (back and forth): 1st row: K, 2nd row: K.
Pattern: See diagram. Knit the entire lion pattern in stocking sts. Knit the entire face in ochre yellow and embroider the eyes, nose and mouth on afterwards in mattress sts.

Front piece: Cast on 62-70-78 (86-94) sts (incl 1 edge st each side) on needle size 2.5 mm with corn blue Camelia. Knit 6 rows Rib with 1 edge st each side – knit Rib in stripes as follows: 1 row corn blue, 2 rows ochre yellow, 1 row red, 2 rows corn blue. Change to needle size 3 mm, continue in corn blue and stocking sts with edge sts in garter st. Remember the knitting tension! When piece measures 4-5-6 (7-9) cm knit pattern (make sure to place it mid front – see arrow for middle and use as marker). After the pattern, complete in corn blue. At the same time, when piece measures 17-18-21 (24-26) cm cast of for armhole each side on every other row: 2 sts 3-3-4 (4-4) times, 1 st 5-5-4 (4-4) times = 40-48-54 (62-70) sts. When piece measures 23-25-29 (32-35) cm cast off the middle 10-12-14 (16-18) sts for neck. Then, cast off for neckline on every other row: 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 3 times = 8-11-13 (16-19) sts left on each shoulder. Cast off when piece measures 27-29-33 (37-40) cm
.
Back: Cast on and knit as front piece. However, leave out the pattern. Cast off for armhole as for front piece = 40-48-54 (62-70) sts. Continue as follows:
The 3 smallest sizes: When piece measures 23-25-29 cm cast off middle 6 sts for split. Knit each piece separately, garter st the edge st towards the split. When piece measures 26-28-32 cm cast off 7-8-9 sts towards the split mid back, continuing cast off 2 sts on next row towards neckline = 8-11-13 sts left for shoulder. Cast off when piece measures 27-29-33 cm.
The 2 largest sizes: When piece measures (36-39) cm cast off middle (26-28) sts for neck. Continuing, cast off 2 sts on next row towards neckline = (16-19) sts left on each shoulder. Cast off when piece measures (37-40) cm.

Sleeve: Cast on 40-42-46 (48-50) sts (incl 1 edge st each side) on needle size 2.5 mm with Camelia. Knit Rib as described for front and back pieces. Change to needle size 3 mm and continue in stocking sts and corn blue (knit edge st in garter st). At the same time, when piece measures 4-4-5 (5-5) cm inc 1 st each side: 3-4-5 (7-8) times on every 14-12-10 (8-8) rows = 46-50-56 (62-66) sts. When piece measures 19-20-22 (25-28) cm cast off for sleeve cap each side on every other row: 2 sts 2-3-3 (3-4) times, 1 st 8-6-8 (7-5) times, then 2 sts each side until piece measures 25-26-29 (32-35) cm, cast off.

Assembly: The 3 smallest sizes: Gather approx 8 sts along left side of the split mid back on needle size 2.5 mm in corn blue. Knit 2.5 cm Rib (corn blue on all rows) cast off. Repeat along the right side of split. Place right edge on top of left edge and fasten at the bottom. Sew shoulder seams. Gather approx 70-90 sts round the neckline from mid back on needle size 2.5 mm in corn blue (also over split edges). Knit Rib back and forth on needle from mid back. After 0.5 cm cast off for 1 buttonhole over right edge - 1 buttonhole = cast off 2 st, cast on 2 new sts over the cast off sts on next row. When neck measures 1 cm change to olive and knit 1 row in Rib before casting off. Sew on button to fit buttonhole.
The 2 largest sizes: Sew shoulder seams. Gather approx 80-100 sts around neck line on double pointed needles size 2.5 mm in corn blue. Knit Rib for 2 cm, change to olive and knit 1 round in Rib before casting off.
All sizes: Sew in the sleeves. Sew sleeve and side seams in one within 1 edge st. Embroider the face of the lion. Embroider the lianas in olive, running from the shoulders down in different lengths – embroider the liana with mattress sts over 2 sts in height and 1 st in width – also, embroider the lianas down the back.
