Dear Jacqueline, you need a gauge of 16sts x 20 rows = square of 10x10 cm or 4''. Could you please tell us which needle size and yarn you are using so that we can help you better? Happy knitting!

The gauge for Annabelle vest does not say which needle to use .. 5.5 or the 4.5 to do a swatch ..

Dear Jacqueline , for the swatches we usually use the needles that are used for the main part of the knitting, i.e. in this case needle 5.5. Happy knitting!

Hello I am a beginner knitter and I made some scarves, cushion covers and hats before. Is this pattern easy for a first time sweater? Also instead of two strands of yarn can I use worsted weight yarn? Thank you so much for your beautiful patterns. Lalitha.
12.04.2021 - 06:25DROPS Design answered:
Dear Lalitha, this pattern is easy enough for an "advanced beginner", and we do have a number of viseos (linked below the pattern) to help you , also you can always ask for help in th estore where you bought your DROPS yarn from. For substituting yarns, you can used our yarn converter HERE. Happy knitting,

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge in height = Knit 2 rows. DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 98 stitches) and divide by the number of decreases to be made (e.g. 24) = 4.1. In this example, decrease by knitting together approx. each 3rd and 4th stitch. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in sections, back and forth, and sewn together to finish. Ribbed edges are then worked around the neck and armholes. The whole piece is worked with 1 strand of each quality (= 2 strands). BACK PIECE: Cast on 98-106-114-122-134-150 stitches with circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7 and 1 strand Alpaca and 1 strand Kid-Silk (= 2 strands). Purl 1 row (= wrong side). The next row is worked as follows from the right side: 2 edge stitches in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 4 stitches left, knit 2 and finish with 2 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 8 cm = 3 1/8". Knit 1 row from the wrong side, then knit 1 row from the right side where you decrease 24-26-28-28-30-36 stitches evenly spaced – read DECREASE TIP = 74-80-86-94-104-114 stitches. Change to circular needle size 5.5 MM = US 9. Work stockinette stitch back and forth with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When the piece measures 31-32-33-34-35-36 cm = 12 1/4"-12 1/2"-13"-13 3/8"-13 3/4"-14 1/4", bind off for both armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: Bind off 3 stitches 1-1-1-1-2-2 times, 2 stitches 2-3-3-4-4-5 times and 1 stitch 1-1-2-2-3-4 times on each side = 58-60-64-68-70-74 stitches. Continue back and forth with stockinette stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. When the piece measures 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm = 22"-22 3/4"-23 5/8"-24 3/8"-25 1/4"-26", bind off the middle 24-24-26-26-28-28 stitches for the neck and each shoulder is finished separately. Then bind off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = 16-17-18-20-20-22 stitches on the shoulder. Continue with stockinette stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch until the piece measures 58-60-62-64-66-68 cm = 22 3/4"-23 5/8"-24 3/8"-25 1/4"-26"-26 3/4" (approx. 27-28-29-30-31-32 cm = 10 5/8"-11"-11 3/8"-11 3/4"-12 1/4"-12 1/2" from the bottom of the armhole). Bind off with knit from the right side (make sure the bind-off edge is not tight). Work the other shoulder in the same way. FRONT PIECE: Cast on 98-106-114-122-134-150 stitches with circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7 and 1 strand Alpaca and 1 strand Kid-Silk (= 2 strands). Purl 1 row (= wrong side). The next row is worked as follows from the right side: Work 2 edge stitches in garter stitch, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 4 stitches left, knit 2 and finish with 2 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 8 cm = 3 1/8". Knit 1 row from the wrong side, then knit 1 row from the right side where you decrease 24-26-28-28-30-36 stitches evenly spaced = 74-80-86-94-104-114 stitches. When the piece measures 47-49-50-52-53-55 cm = 18 1/2"-19 1/4"-19 3/4"-20 1/2"-21"-21 5/8", place the middle 12-12-14-14-16-16 stitches on a thread for the neck and each shoulder is finished separately. Then bind off stitches on each row from the neck as follows: Bind off 3 stitches 1 time, 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 2 times = 16-17-18-20-20-22 stitches on the shoulder. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams with grafting stitches, inside the bind-off edges. Start under the armholes and sew the side seams inside the 1 edge stitch – leave approx. 8 cm = 3 1/8" open for the split on each side. NECK: Start from the right side, at one of the shoulder seams. Using short circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7, 1 strand Alpaca and 1 strand Kid-Silk (= 2 strands) knit up 88 to 104 stitches (including the 12-12-14-14-16-16 stitches from the thread) inside 1 stitch around the neck opening (number of stitches must be divisible by 4). Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 3 cm = 1 1/8". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. ARMHOLE-EDGE: Start from the right side by the side seam under the armhole. Using short circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7, 1 strand Alpaca and 1 strand Kid-Silk (= 2 strands) knit up 116 to 140 stitches around the armhole (number of stitches must be divisible by 4). Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 3 cm = 1 1/8". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Work the other armhole in the same way. |
