How to make felted wool balls

How to make felted wool balls

Decorate with small felted balls, it`s cheap and easy. Use leftover yarn in pure wool and make balls in different sizes.

Figur 1: Use a yarn made of pure wool (not superwash treated). DROPS Eskimo is perfect.

Figur 2: Wind the yarn into a ball in the desired size.

Figur 3: Make them in the colors and sizes you want.

Figur 4: Put the balls inside a nylon stocking. Make a knot with some thread between the balls so that they don`t felt together.

Figur 5: Place the ball in a nylon stocking and put it in the washing machine with a detergent without enzymes and optical bleach. Wash at 40 degrees with normal spin but no pre-wash. At subsequent wash, wash the ball at regular wool programme. Take the balls out of the stocking and let them dry.

Figur 6: Now you have balls to decorate with! Decorate you dressed dinner table, put them in a nice bowl or attach them to a string to make a garland.

Could you use these felted balls or even smaller as beads? I would like to create them to make a necklace with the felted beads...

Dear Sandra, we do not have this experience, but it's worth a try. Follow the instructions, but do not wind the yarn into a ball, but cut small pieces of Snow (0,5 - 1 cm). Put the yarn (the small pieces and not too much yarn), inside a nylon stocking. Make a knot with some thread between the "balls" so that they don`t felt together. It might work. Happy felting!

Will these come apart after they have dried? or do they stay hard?

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Alice, when they are felted, they should stay hard so that you can string them together to make a garland as shown in the video. Happy felting!

Herlige fargerike kuler.
