START THE PIECE HERE:

----------------------------------------------------------

HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
Worked in the round on circular needle, bottom up. Divide for opening, work back and forth, before putting the piece together again and work in the round. Switch to double pointed needles when needed.

HAT:
Cast on 68-72-76 stitches on circular needle size 7 mm. Knit 1 round, then work rib knit 2/purl 2. Work rib for 4 cm, then knit 1 round while at the same time decreasing 8 stitches evenly = 60-64-68 stitches. When piece measures 8 cm, decrease 4 stitches evenly, repeat decrease when piece measures 12 cm = 52-56-60 stitches.
Continue with stocking stitch until piece measures 14-15-16 cm. Work next round as follows: Work 2 stitches in garter stitch, knit 2/purl 2 over the next 20-20-24 stitches, knit 2 and 2 stitches in garter stitch, knit the rest of round as before. Continue like this for 4 cm. Work next round as follows: Work 2 stitches in GARTER STITCH – see explanation above, cast off the next 22-22-26 stitches, work 2 stitches in garter stitch and knit the rest of round. Turn piece, now work back and forth over the 30-34-34 stitches on needle. Work 3 rows in stocking stitch with 2 stitches in garter stitch in each side. Now work piece in the round again. Work over the 30-34-34 stitches, at the end of next row (= from right side) cast on 22-22-26 new stitches and work in the round over all stitches (= 52-56-60 stitches). Work as follows from beginning of round: 2 stitches in garter stitch, knit 2/purl 2 over the next 20-20-24 stitches, knit 2 and 2 stitches in garter stitch, knit the rest of round as before. Now work piece from where the 22-22-26 stitches where cast on. Continue with stocking stitch and rib until piece measures 4 cm, then work stocking stitch over all stitches. When piece measures 8-9-10 cm, insert 8 markers in piece as follows: In size S/M there is alternately 6 and 7 stitches between marker threads, in size M/L there are 7 stitches between marker threads, and in size L/XL there is alternately 7 and 8 stitches between marker threads. On next round decrease 1 stitch before each marker, decrease by knitting 2 stitches together. Decrease like this every 4th round 3 times in total = 28-32-36 stitches. On next round work all stitches together 2 by 2 = 14-16-18 stitches. Work last round as follows: Knit stitches together 2 by 2 = 7-8-9 stitches. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Hat measures approx. 17-18-19 cm from opening and approx. 38-40-42 in total.
