EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN:

-------------------------------------------------------

DIAGRAM: Work in a circle according to diagram A.1

CROCHET TIP FOR CHAIN STITCH:
If you work outermost on the hook the chain stitch will often be too tight; 1 chain stitch should be as long as 1 treble crochet is wide.

STIFFENING TIP: To make the mat a little stiffer – it can be dipped in sugared water or colourless fizzy drink and laid flat to dry.

START THE PIECE HERE:

-------------------------------------------------------

SKULL:
The piece is worked in a circle according to diagram A.1. Begin at the symbol in the middle: Work 12 chain stitches and form them into a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch – read CROCHET TIP FOR CHAIN STITCH. Then work a similar circle which is fastened with 1 slip stitch in the same chain stitch. Round 1 is worked over both circles as shown – REMEMBER THE CROCHET TENSION! After round 3 fasten and cut the strand and turn the piece upside-down. Round 4 begins bottom left (seen when the piece is held the right way up). Continue according to the diagram, cut and fasten the strand on the opposite side from where the round started; i.e. bottom right.
You can make the mat a little stiffer - see STIFFENING TIP above.
