50 g colour no 53, light grey
50 g colour no 01, off white

Yarn is for 2 hats, one in each colour combination and beard for both hats.

DROPS DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES SIZE 8 mm - or size needed to get 11 sts x 15 rows in stocking st = 10 x 10 cm.
After felting: 14 sts x 24 rows.
DROPS CROCHET HOOK SIZE 5 mm - for ch-spaces to fasten beard.
----------------------------------------------------------

STRIPES:
Work * 1 round medium grey, 2 rounds Christmas red *, repeat from *-* until finished measurements.
----------------------------------------------------------

SANTA HAT:
Worked in the round.
Cast on 42 sts on double pointed needles size 8 mm with Christmas red. P 1 round. K 2 rounds. Now work in stocking st and STRIPES - see explanation above, AT THE SAME TIME when 4 rounds with stripes have been worked, work next round with Christmas red as follows: * K 2 tog, 1 YO *, repeat from *-* the entire round (on next round K all sts and YOs with Christmas red to make holes). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION Continue with stripes, AT THE SAME TIME on next round with Christmas red dec 3 sts evenly = 39 sts. Repeat dec every 3rd round until 6 sts remain on round. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining sts, tighten tog and fasten. Hat measures approx. 30 cm.

LOOPS:
Work loops to fasten beard with in Christmas red on hook size 5 mm. Turn hat inside-out and work ch-space from inside of hat as follows: *Work 1 dc around the first/next 2 sts worked K tog in eyelet row, work 8 ch *, repeat from *-* the entire round and finish with 1 sl st in first dc = 21 loops. Fasten off.

Work another Santa hat but in opposite colours (medium grey with red stripes).

FELTING:
Thread a plastic bag through all ch-space inside hat to avoid the ch-spaces from felting tog. Thread in addition a small plastic bag through the top of hat (where sts where tightened tog) and tie a knot - it will make it easier to fasten a pompom at the top of hat after felting. Place the hat in the washing machine with a detergent without enzymes and optical bleach. Wash at 40 degrees with normal spin but no pre-wash. After wash shape the hat to the right size while still wet. At subsequent wash, wash the hat at regular wool programme.

BEARD:
Fasten fringes in ch-space inside hat after felting. 1 fringe = cut 4 lengths of 18 cm off white. Place them double and thread loop through ch-space. Pull ends through loop. Fasten 1 fringe in every other ch-space for 5 ch-spaces. Then cut beard in desired length and shape. To make the beard look nice soak it, squeeze the water out and leave to dry.

POMPOMS:
Make a dense pompom approx. 5 cm in diameter with off white for the red Santa hat with medium grey stripes and a pompom with Christmas red for Santa hat with red stripes. Fasten it to the top of the Santa hats.
Make 2 small and dense pompoms, 4 cm, with light grey and fasten a pompom on cast-on edge on each Santa hat for nose.

AFTER FELTING:
If the piece is not felted enough and is too big: Wash the piece one more time in the washing machine while it is still wet add a terry towel that measures approx. 50 x 70 cm - NOTE: Do not use a short program.
If the piece has been felted too much and is too small: While the piece is still wet stretch it to the correct measurements, if the piece is dry, make sure to soak it first.
Remember: All subsequent washes are as a normal wool garment.
