+ some left-over thin wool yarn in black, white, and red.

DROPS STRAIGHT NEEDLES SIZE 9 mm - or size needed to get 10 sts x 20 rows in garter st = 10 x 10 cm.

SLIPPER:
Worked back and forth in one piece and sewn tog mid under foot when finished.
The whole slipper is worked K on all rows (= garter st).
Cast on 28-32-36-40-42 sts on needle size 9 mm with lime. K 3-4-5-6-6 rows. Insert a marker in middle of piece.
Work next row as follows: K until 1-1-1-2-2 sts remain before marker, make 1 YO, K 2-2-2-4-4 sts and make 1 more YO, K the rest of row. On next row K the YOs twisted to avoid holes (i.e. work in back loop of st) – continue the inc with 1 YO on each side of the middle 2-2-2-4-4 sts on every row until there are 50-56-62-68-74 sts on needle.
Switch to olive. Work 4 rows without inc. Then dec 1 st at the beg of the next 4-4-4-6-6 rows (i.e. dec a total of 2-2-2-3-3 sts in each side) = 46-52-58-62-68 sts remain on needle. Cast off the remaining sts.
Loosely sew tog edge to edge under foot and mid back (avoid a thick edge).

EYES:
Cast on 2 sts with olive on needle size 9 mm.
Row 1: K 2 sts in each st = 4 sts.
Row 2: P all sts.
Row 3: K 2 sts in every st = 8 sts.
Row 4-6: Work in stocking st without inc.
Row 7: K all sts tog 2 by 2 = 4 sts.
Row 8: P all sts.
Row 9: K all sts tog 2 by 2 = 2 sts.
Cut the thread approx. 20 cm, pull it through the remaining sts. A circle has now been worked, baste the thread around the circle and tighten tog.
Work another eye and sew them on top of the slipper.

FELTING:
The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below.
Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment.

IN WASHING MACHINE:
Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING:
Lay the piece in the washing machine, using a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme).
Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet.

IN TUMBLE DRYER:
Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING:
Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly.

FACE:
Sew on a red mouth, 2 black stitches for nostrils and sew white and black on the eyes as on picture.
