BASKET:
Cast on 80 sts on needle size 9 mm with Snow. K 4 rows. Then work in stocking st. When piece measures 25 cm, K 4 rows over all sts before loosely casting off.
BASE:
Knit up 80 sts from WS at the top of piece 1 row below cast off edge. This is done to make a little edge on the basket. K 1 row from RS, while at the same time dec 2 sts evenly = 78 sts. Insert 6 markers in the piece as follows: 1st marker after 13 sts, 2nd marker after 26 sts, 3rd marker after 39 sts, 4th marker after 52 sts, 5th marker after 65 sts and 6th marker at the end of row. Work in stocking st while at the same time dec by working 2 sts tog (from RS): 1 st before every marker every other row a total of 12 times = 6 sts remain on needle. The base measures approx. 17 cm and the entire basket measures approx. 43 cm from cast on edge. Pull a thread through the remaining sts and tighten tog.
ASSEMBLY:
Sew the basket tog edge to edge in the side from cast on edge and in towards the centre.
FELTING:
The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below.
Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment.
IN WASHING MACHINE:
Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING:
Lay the piece in the washing machine, using a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme).
Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet.
IN TUMBLE DRYER:
Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING:
Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly.
