PATTERN:
See diagram M.1. Work the entire pattern in stocking st.
FRENCH KNOT:
Bring the threaded needle from WS to RS in the st where the knot should be. Place the needle tip against piece and twine the loop tightly 2 times around the needle tip. Pull the needle through these loops so that there is a double knot on the thread. Insert the needle as close as possible to the st where the thread first came through (not in the exact same place, or it will pull back through) and fasten on the back - see Fig.1.
HEEL DECREASE:
Row 1 (= RS): Work until 9-9-9-11 sts remain, slip 1 st as if to K, K 1, psso, turn piece.
Row 2 (= WS): Work until 9-9-9-11 sts remain, slip 1 st as if to P, P 1, psso, turn piece.
Row 3 (= RS): Work until 8-8-8-10 sts remain, slip 1 st as if to K, K 1, psso, turn piece.
Row 4 (= WS): Work until 8-8-8-10 sts remain, slip 1 st as if to P, P 1, psso, turn piece.
Continue dec like this with 1 less st before each dec until there are 8-8-10-10 sts on needle.

SOCK:
Worked in the round on double pointed needles, top down. Cast on 52-56-56-64 sts on double pointed needles size 3 mm with red. K 1 round, continue in rib = P 2/K 2. When rib measures 4-5-5-6 cm, K 1 round while AT THE SAME TIME dec 4-8-8-4 sts evenly = 48-48-48-60 sts. Switch to double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Then work diagram M.1 over all sts (= 4-4-4-5 times). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! After diagram M.1, finish the sock with red. Work 3 cm in stocking st. Now keep the first 12-12-13-15 sts on needle, slip the next 24-24-22-30 sts on a stitch holder (= mid upper foot) and keep the last 12-12-13-15 sts on needle = 24-24-26-30 sts for heel. Work in stocking st back and forth on heel sts for 4½-5-5½-6 cm. Insert a marker. Then work HEEL DECREASE - see explanation above! After heel dec, knit up 10-10-12-10 sts along each side of heel and slip the 24-24-22-30 sts from stitch holder back on needle = 52-52-56-60 sts. Insert a marker on each side of the middle 24-24-24-32 sts on upper foot. Continue in the round AT THE SAME TIME dec in each side as follows: K tog the last 2 sts before the 24-24-24-32 sts on upper foot and K twisted tog the first 2 sts after the 24-24-24-32 sts on upper foot (i.e. work in back loop of sts instead of front). Repeat dec every other round a total of 4 times = 44-44-48-52 sts. When piece measures approx. 15,5-18,5-20,5-23 cm from marker on heel (= approx. 3,5-3,5-3,5-4 cm remain), K 1 round over all sts. Insert a marker in each side so that there are 22-22-24-26 sts on upper foot and under foot. Continue in the round in stocking st over all sts. AT THE SAME TIME dec for toe on each side of both markers as follows: 3 sts before marker: K 2 tog, K 2 (marker is between these 2 sts), K 2 twisted tog (i.e. work in back loop of st instead of front). Repeat dec every other round a total of 3-3-3-4 times and then every round a total of 6-6-7-7 times = 8 sts remain on needle. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts, tighten tog and fasten.
Embroider 5 sts with orange on every snowman for nose.
Embroider French knots according to chart - see
