Rustic Rhythm Hat

Crocheted hat in 2 strands DROPS Safran. Piece is crocheted top down with double crochets, treble crochets and lobster stitch.

For a uni-coloured garment use:
150-150 g DROPS Safran

CROCHET HOOK:
DROPS CROCHET HOOK SIZE 3.5 mm.

CROCHET TENSION:
18 double crochets in width and 21 rows vertically with 2 strands on hook size 3.5 mm = 10 x 10 cm.
18 half treble crochets in width and 16 rows vertically with 2 strands on hook size 3.5 mm = 10 x 10 cm.
REMEMBER: Hook size is only a suggestion! If you have too many stitches on 10 cm switch to larger sized hook or if you get too few stitches on 10 cm switch to smaller sized hook.

EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN:

CROCHET INFORMATION:
Begin every half treble crochet round with 2 chain stitches that replace first half treble crochet. Finish round with 1 slip stitch in 2nd chain stitch at beginning of round.
Begin every double crochet round with 1 chain stitch that replaces first double crochet. Finish round with 1 slip stitch in 1st chain stitch at beginning of round.

PATTERN:
See diagrams A.1 to A.3.

DOUBLE YARN:
Use yarn from both inside and outside of the ball (= 2 strands).

INCREASE TIP (evenly):
To calculate how to increase evenly, use the total number of stitches on round (e.g. 88 stitches) and divide stitches by number of increases to be done (e.g. 4) = 22. In this example increase by working 2 half treble crochets in every 22nd double crochet.

COLOUR CHANGE:
To get a nice transition at colour change work slip stitch at the end of round with the new colour.

LOBSTER STITCH:
Crochet 1 double crochet in each double crochet below but work backwards on the round, i.e. crochet from the left towards the right.

HAT – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked top down. Work alternately double crochets and half treble crochets. Finally work a brim with an edge with reverse crochet.

HAT:
Work 4 chain stitches on hook size 3.5 mm with 1 strand DROPS Safran in colour Light Beige and 1 strand DROPS Safran in colour Marzipan (= 2 strands). Form a ring by working 1 slip stitch in first chain stitch (= A.1).
Then work according to diagram A.2 and A.3 or as explained below, read CROCHET INFORMATION and work as follows:
Work A.2 (= beginning and end of round), work A.3 11 times in total on round. Continue pattern like this. Remember to follow the crochet tension!
When A.2 and A.3 have been worked vertically, there are 87 double crochets + 1 chain stitch on the beginning of round.

Continue to work as follows:
ROUND 1: * Work 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 21-10 double crochets, 2 half treble crochet in next double crochet *, work from * to * 4-8 times in total = 91-95 half treble crochets + 2 chain stitches at the beginning of round.
ROUND 2: Work 1 double crochet in every half treble crochet.
ROUND 3: Work 1 half treble crochet in every double crochet.
ROUND 4: Work 1 double crochet in every half treble crochet.
Work 3rd and 4th ROUND until piece measures 15-17 cm from beginning of piece - finish with a round in double crochets.

Switch to 2 strands in colour Coffee, read DOUBLE YARN in explanation above, and work 3rd and 4th ROUND 1 time.
Switch back to 1 strand colour Light Beige and 1 strand colour Marzipan (= 2 strands). Work 3rd and 4th ROUND until piece measures 17-19 cm. Now work a brim, continue as explained below.

BRIM:
ROUND 1: * Work 2 half treble crochets in first/next double crochets, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 4-4 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each if the next 3-3 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 4-5 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 3-3 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 4-4 double crochets, * work from * to * 4-4 times = 112-116 half treble crochets.
ROUND 2: Work 1 double crochet in every half treble crochet.
ROUND 3: * Work 2 half treble crochets in first/next double crochets, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 5-5 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each if the next 4-4 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 5-6 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 4-4 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 5-5 double crochets, * work from * to * 4-4 times = 132-136 half treble crochets.
ROUND 4: Work 1 double crochet in every half treble crochet.
ROUND 5: * Work 2 half treble crochets in first/next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each if the next 8-8 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 7-7 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 7-8 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 7-7 double crochets, * work from * to * 4-4 times = 148-152 half treble crochets.
ROUND 6: Work 1 double crochet in every half treble crochet.
ROUND 7: * Work 2 half treble crochets in first/next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each if the next 9-9 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 8-8 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 8-9 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 8-8 double crochets, * work from * to * 4-4 times = 164-168 half treble crochets.
ROUND 8: Work 1 double crochet in every half treble crochet.
ROUND 9: * Work 2 half treble crochets in first/next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 20-20 double crochets, 2 half treble crochets in next double crochet, 1 half treble crochet in each of the next 19-20 double crochets, * work from * to * 4-4 times = 172-176 half treble crochets.
ROUND 10: Work 1 double crochet in every half treble crochet.
ROUND 11: Work 1 half treble crochet in every double crochet.

Switch to 2 strands in colour Coffee, read LOBSTER STITCH in explanation above and work an edge in every other stitch as follows:
* Work 1 lobster stitch in next stitch, work 2 chain stitches and skip 1 stitch *, work from * to * the rest of round. Finish with 1 slip stitch at the beginning of round. Fasten off.
