Knitting tension: 20 stitches x 26 rows with needle size 4 mm and pattern = 10 x 10 cm. Remember the needle size is only a guide!
Pattern: See diagram (1 diagram = 1 repeat). The pattern in the diagram is seen from the right side. The whole pattern is worked in stocking stitch.
Edge: Work 3 cm stocking stitch, purl 1 round (= folding edge - measure the piece from here), 3 cm stocking stitch.
Long pattern: If you want the long pattern work as follows: Body: Measurements at the armholes, neck and casting off increase by 18 (20-20) cm. Finished length = 70 (74-77) cm. Knit up approx. 40-42 more stitches on the band and work 1-2 extra buttonholes. The amount of yarn increases by 100 g in each colour.
Body: If you want the long pattern, see description above. The jacket is worked in the round with circular needle after Edge and is then clipped up for armholes and mid front at the end. Cast on 219 (243-267) stitches (including 1 edge stitch in each side towards mid front) with circular needle size 2.5 mm and black and work Edge back and forth on needle. Change to circular needle size 4 mm and work M.1 at the same time as you increase 3 stitches mid front (these 3 stitches + the 2 edge stitches (= 5 stitches) are for clipping up afterwards and are not worked into the pattern). Remember the knitting tension. After M.1, work M.2 upwards. At the same time when the piece measures 25 (27-29) cm increase 5 stitches in each side for armholes (these stitches are for clipping up afterwards and are not worked into the pattern) - 109 (121-133) stitches = back piece and 108 (120-132) stitches + 5 clipping up stitches = front piece. When the piece measures 45 (47-50) cm cast off the middle 18 (20-20) stitches + 5 clipping-up stitches for the neck mid front. Continue to decrease for neck every 2nd round: 3 stitches x 1, 2 stitches x 2, 1 stitch x 3. At the same time when the piece measures 50 (52-55) cm work M.1 at the same time as the middle 35 (37-37) stitches at the back are cast off for neck. Then cast off 2 stitches in each side on the next round towards neck mid back. Cast off after M.1, The piece measures approx. 52 (54-57) cm.
Sleeve: Cast on 52 (52-54) stitches with double pointed needles size 2.5 mm and black and work Edge. Change to double pointed needles size 4 mm and work M.1. After M.1 work M.2 upwards to finished length. At the same time after Edge increase mid under sleeve: 2 stitches x 28 (28-29) on S/M: Every 4th round, M/L + X-Large: Alternately every 3rd and 4th round = 108 (108-112) stitches. When the piece measures approx. 49 (47-45) cm, work 2 cm stocking stitch with wrong side out as a flap to cover the cut edge on the body, cast off.
Assembly: Sew a marker thread down the middle of the increased stitches in each side and mid front. Sew two machine seams on either side of the marker thread, seam 1 = 1/2 stitch from thread, seam 2 = 1/2 stitch from seam 1. Clip up for the armholes and mid front. Sew the shoulder seams. Knit up approx. 100-110 stitches along the left front piece with black and needle size 2.5 mm and work Edge. Repeat along the right front piece but after 1 cm cast off for buttonholes evenly on row - 1 buttonhole = cast off 2 stitches and cast on 2 new stitches over the cast off stitches on the next row (remember buttonhole on folding side). Knit up approx. 110-115 stitches around the neck with needle size 2.5 mm and black and work 2.5 cm stocking stitch, change to off white and work 2 rows stocking stitch, the next row as follows: Knit 2 together, 1 yarn over (= folding edge). Change back to black and work 2.5 cm stocking stitch, cast off. Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last knitted row on the sleeve before the cover and a stitch in the body after the machine seam. Turn the jacket inside out with the wrong side out and sew the flap from the sleeve onto the body by hand. Fold the edges towards the wrong side and sew down. Sew on the buttons.
