EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN:

PATTERN:
See diagrams A.1 to A.5. Choose diagram for your size (applies to A.2 to A.5)
Diagram A.5 shows positioning of thumb on right mitten.

START THE PIECE HERE:

-------------------------------------------------------

MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, from the cuff upwards, increasing stitches for the thumb. When the increases for the thumb are finished the stitches are placed on a thread while the hand is finished. The thumb is worked in the round.

LEFT MITTEN:
Cast on 52-56 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm and colour goldenrod DROPS Lima. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) and work coloured stripes according to diagram A.1.
Now continue with stocking stitch and pattern according to A.2 – on the first round in A.2 decrease 4-4 stitches evenly spaced = 48-52 stitches.
When you have worked as far as the grey squares in the diagram, work A.3 over these 3 stitches. Continue working according to diagrams A.2 and A.3 (you increase stitches in A.3). After the last row in A.3, there are 13-15 stitches in A.3 – place these stitches on a thread and cast on 3 stitches behind these stitches = 48-52 stitches. Continue working A.2 over all stitches. When the diagram is finished, there are 8 stitches left. Cut the strand, tack it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.

THUMB:
Place the 13-15 stitches from the thread on double pointed needles size 3 mm. Start the round by knitting up 9 stitches behind the thumb (knit up 2 stitches on each side, 5 stitches in the 3 cast-on stitches) = 22-24 stitches. Work diagram A.4. When the diagram is finished, there are 6-8 stitches left. Cut the strand, tack it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.

RIGHT MITTEN:
Work in the same way as the left mitten but with the thumb on the opposite side – see diagram A.5 which shows where the thumb is positioned in the pattern.
