EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN:
-------------------------------------------------------
PATTERN:
See diagram A.1. The pattern is worked in stocking stitch.
KNITTING TIP-1:
If you want mittens with a larger/smaller circumference, you can work with a half or whole needle size larger/smaller. A half needle size will give approx. 1 cm more/less in circumference, a whole needle size will give approx. 2 cm.
KNITTING TIP-2:
To avoid the mittens losing their elasticity when working pattern, it is important that the strands at the back are not tight. Use a size larger needle when working pattern if the piece becomes tight.
KNITTING TIP-3:
The length before starting the thumb-opening can be adjusted by working more/fewer rounds before working the marker for the thumb-opening.
DECREASE TIP:
Start 3 stitches before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. Repeat at the second marker-thread

MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked in the round, bottom up. The mittens have the same circumference in both sizes but different lengths. The circumference can be adjusted – read KNITTING TIP-1!
LEFT MITTEN:
Cast on 56-56 stitches with double pointed needles size 2.5 mm and colour light beige DROPS Karisma. Knit 1 round. Work rib (knit 1, purl 1) for 3 cm.
Change to double pointed needles size 3 mm. Knit 1 round and decrease 8 stitches evenly spaced = 48-48 stitches.
Read KNITTING TIP -2 and work A.1 6 times on the round. Continue this pattern. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION!
AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 12½-14 cm – read KNITTING TIP -3, work a marker for the thumb-opening as follows:
Work 15-14 stitches in pattern as before, 8-9 stocking stitches for the thumb-opening using a different coloured strand that shows, place these 8-9 stitches back on the left needle and work pattern as before to the end of the round.
Continue A.1 over all stitches. When A.1 is finished there are 42-42 stitches. Finish the mitten with colour light beige.
Work until the mitten measures 20-22 cm from the cast-on edge. There is approx. 4 cm left; try the mitten on and work to desired length before starting to decrease.
Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round and 1 marker-thread after 21-21 stitches.
On the next round decrease 1 stitch on each side of both marker-threads – read DECREASE TIP (4 decreased stitches).
Decrease like this every 2nd round 4 more times, then every round 3 times = 10-10 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 5-5 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The mitten measures approx. 24-26 cm.
THUMB:
Carefully remove the different colour strand from the 8-9 thumb-stitches and place the stitches on each side of the opening on 2 separate double pointed needles size 3 mm (8-9 stitches on each side of the opening) = 16-18 stitches. Divide the stitches onto 4 needles and work stocking stitch with colour light beige. In addition, knit up 2 stitches on each side of the thumb (between the 8-9 stitches) = 20-22 stitches. Work stocking stitch in the round.
AT THE SAME TIME on round 2, decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of the round by knitting 2 stitches together. Knit 2 rounds without decreasing. Repeat the decrease on the next round = 18-20 stitches.
Work until the thumb measures 5-5½ cm. There is approx. 1 cm left; try the mitten on and work to desired length before starting to decrease. Insert 1 marker-thread in each side of the thumb = 9-10 stitches between the threads.
On the next round decrease by knitting 2 together before the marker-threads and knitting 2 twisted together after the threads. Decrease like this every round 2 more times = 6-8 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 3-4 stitches.
Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The thumb measures approx. 6-6½ cm.
RIGHT MITTEN:
Work in the same way as the left mitten until the right mitten measures 12½-14 cm – adjust to match the left.
Now work a marker for the thumb-opening as follows:
Work 25-25 stitches in pattern as before, 8-9 stocking stitches for the thumb-opening with a different coloured strand that shows, place these 8-9 stitches back on the left needle and work pattern as before to the end of the round.
Finish the mitten in the same way as the left mitten.
THUMB:
Work in the same way as the left mitten.
