MITTENS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, from the cuff upwards.
LEFT MITTEN:
Cast on 48-52-56 stitches with double pointed needles size 2.5 mm and DROPS Merino Extra Fine.
Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 11 cm.
Knit 1 round and decrease 4-4-4 stitches evenly spaced = 44-48-52 stitches. Switch to double pointed needles size 3 mm. Insert 1 marker in the next-to-last stitch on the round (thumb-stitch) – and allow it to follow your work onwards.
Work stocking stitch and pattern A.1 as follows: 3-4-5 stocking stitches, work A.1 (19 stitches), 3-4-5 stocking stitches, insert 1 marker-thread (front of mitten), 19-21-23 stocking stitches, insert 1 marker-thread (palm).
Continue the pattern until the piece measures 13 cm from the cast-on edge.
Insert 1 marker here; the piece is measured from here.
Start to increase for the thumb-gusset, continuing stocking stitch and A.1 as before as follows: Work to the thumb-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit the thumb-stitch, 1 yarn over (2 increased stitches); yarn overs knitted twisted on the next round to avoid holes.
Repeat the increases, outside the previously increased stitches, every 3rd round a total of 5-6-7 times = 54-60-66 stitches. Work until the piece measures 5½-6½-7 cm from the marker, place the 11-13-15 thumb-stitches on a thread and cast on 1 stitch behind the thumb = 44-48-52 stitches.
Continue with stocking stitch and A.1 until the piece measures 14-15-16 cm from the marker (8½-8½-9½ cm from the cast-on stitch behind the thumb); there is approx. 3 cm to finished length. Now start to decrease – when you have worked a couple of rounds after the last cabling: Work diagram A.2 over A.1 and decrease at the same time in the sides - read DECREASE TIP.
Repeat the decreases every 2nd round 3 more times. When diagram A.2 and the decreases are finished there are 26-30-34 stitches. Knit 1 round.
On the next round, * knit 2 together *, repeat from *-* to end of round = 13-15-17 stitches. Knit 1 round. Knit 1 then * knit 2 together *, repeat from *-* to end of round = 7-8-9 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it th rough the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
THUMB:
Place the 11-13-15 thumb-stitches on double pointed needles size 3 mm and knit up 3 stitches at the back of the thumb (1 stitch before and after the cast-on stitch, plus the cast-on stitch itself) = 14-16-18 stitches. Work stocking stitch in the round for 5-5½-6 cm (½ cm to finished length). On the next round * knit 2 together *, repeat from *-* to end of round = 7-8-9 stitches. Knit 1-0-1, * knit 2 together *, repeat from *-* to end of round = 4-4-5 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
RIGHT MITTEN:
Cast on and work in the same way as the left mitten but inserting the thumb-marker in the 27th-29th-31st stitch on the round.
