CROCHET HOOK:
DROPS CROCHET HOOK SIZE 3.5 mm.
CROCHET TENSION:
18 double crochets in width and 21 rows vertically = 10 x 10 cm.
NOTE! Remember that hook size is only a suggestion. If you have too many stitches on 10 cm switch to larger hook. If you have too few stitches on 10 cm switch to smaller hook.

EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN:

CROCHET INFORMATION:
At the beginning of every row with double crochets work 1 chain stitch to replace first double crochet, i.e. skip first stitch from previous row.
Finish round with 1 slip stitch in first chain stitch at beginning of round.
STRIPES:
Work cast-on plus the 9-9-8 first round in colour red (piece measures approx. 4-4-4 cm), then work stripes in following order: 7-7-8 rounds with colour orange (piece measures approx.7½-7½-8 cm), 7-7-8 rounds with colour dandelion (piece measures approx.11-11-12 cm), 7-7-8 rounds with colour parrot green (piece measures approx. 14-14-15½ cm), 7-7-8 rounds with colour royal blue (piece measures approx. 17½-17½-19½ cm), then work with colour purple until finished measurements (approx. 7-8-8 rounds with double crochets).
COLOUR CHANGE:
When switching colour on next round, you should switch colour before the last slip stitch on previous is worked, this makes for a nicer transition to the new colour.
INCREASE TIP:
Increase 1 double crochet by working 2 double crochets in same double crochet.

HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
Piece is worked in the round top down, i.e. work from the top of hat and down, then work the brim in the round.
HAT:
Work 4 chain stitches on hook size 3.5 mm with colour red in DROPS Paris, and form a ring with 1 slip stitch in first chain stitch.
ROUND 1: Read CROCHET INFO and work 6 double crochets around the ring with colour red. Then work STRIPES - read explanation above and read COLOUR CHANGE.
ROUND 2: Work 2 double crochets in every double crochet = 12 stitches.
ROUND 3: * 1 double crochet in first/next stitch, work 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 18 double crochets.
ROUND 4: * 1 double crochet in each of the 2 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 24 stitches.
ROUND 5: * 1 double crochet in each of the 3 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 30 stitches.
ROUND 6: * 1 double crochet in each of the 4 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 36 stitches.
ROUND 7: * 1 double crochet in each of the 5 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 42 stitches.
ROUND 8: * 1 double crochet in each of the 6 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 48 stitches.
ROUND 9: * 1 double crochet in each of the 7 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 54 stitches.
ROUND 10: * 1 double crochet in each of the 8 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 60 stitches.
ROUND 11: * 1 double crochet in each of the 9 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 66 stitches.
ROUND 12: * 1 double crochet in each of the 10 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 72 stitches.
ROUND 13: * 1 double crochet in each of the 11 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 78 stitches.
ROUND 14: * 1 double crochet in each of the 12 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 84 stitches.
SIZE S-M:
ROUND 15: * 1 double crochet in each of the 20 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 88 stitches.
Increases are done in size S/M.
SIZE M/L:
ROUND 15: * 1 double crochet in each of the 13 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 90 stitches.
ROUND 16: * 1 double crochet in each of the 44 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 92 stitches.
Increases are done in size M/L.
SIZE L/XL:
ROUND 15: * 1 double crochet in each of the 13 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 90 stitches.
ROUND 16: * 1 double crochet in each of the 14 first/next stitches, 2 double crochets in next stitch *, work from *-* the entire round = 96 stitches.
Increases are done in size L/XL.
ALL SIZES:
= 88-92-96 stitches. Work 16-16-19 more round with stripes as explained but without increase until the piece measures approx. 15-15-16½ cm from cast-on. Now work brim as explained below:
BRIM:
Work as follows:
ROUND 1: Work 1 double crochet in every stitch the entire round while AT THE SAME TIME increasing 14-14-14 stitches evenly - read INCREASE TIP = 102-106-110 stitches.
ROUNDS 2-4: Work 1 double crochet in every stitch the entire round.
ROUND 5: Work 1 double crochet in every stitch the entire round while AT THE SAME TIME increasing 12-13-13 stitches evenly = 114-119-123 stitches.
ROUNDS 6-8: Work 1 double crochet in every stitch the entire round.
ROUND 9: Work 1 double crochet in every stitch the entire round while AT THE SAME TIME increasing 12-13-13 stitches evenly = 126-132-136 stitches.
ROUNDS 10-13: Work 1 double crochet in every stitch the entire round.
ROUND 14: Use double yarn in colour purple and work 1 slip stitch around every double crochet - make sure not to work the slip stitches too tight.
Fasten off. The hat measures approx. 21-22-23 cm from cast-on at the top of hat.
