EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN:
----------------------------------------------------------
PATTERN:
See diagram A.1.
KNITTING TIP:
To avoid the knitting tension to tighten when working pattern, it is important not to tighten the strands on back side of piece. Switch to a higher needle number when working pattern if the pattern is somewhat tight.
DECREASE/INCREASE TIP (evenly):
To calculate how to decrease/increase evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (e.g. 84 stitches) and divide stitches by number of decreased/increases to be done (e.g. 4) = 21.
In this example decrease by knitting every 20th and 21st stitch together.
When increasing make 1 yarn over after every approx. 21st stitch.
DECREASE TIP:
Work until 2 stitches remain before marker, knit the next 2 stitches together (= 1 stitch decreased). Repeat at each of the other markers.

HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
Worked in the round on circular needle, bottom up. Switch to double pointed needles when needed.
HAT:
Cast on 84-88-92-92 stitches on circular needle size 3 mm with DROPS Air in colour medium grey. Purl 1 round. Then work rib (= knit 2/purl 2) for 4 cm.
Switch to circular needle size 4.5 mm and knit 1 round while adjusting number of stitches to 80-90-90-90 (i.e. in size 3/5, 9/11 and 12/14 years decrease 4-2-2 stitches and in size 6/8 years increase 2 stitches) - read DECREASE/INCREASE TIP.
Work in stocking stitch for 5 cm. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION!
Now work pattern as follows: Work A.1 (= 10 stitches) 8-9-9-9 times in total on round– read KNITTING TIP. When diagram has been worked vertically, piece measures approx. 21 cm. Continue to work with colour medium grey until piece measures 21-22-23-24 cm from cast-on edge.
Now insert 6 markers in the piece (without working) as follows:
In size 3/5 years:
Insert a marker at beginning of round, skip the next 14 stitches, * insert a marker here, skip the next 13 stitches *, repeat from *-* 3 more times (= 4 times in total), insert a marker here, 14 stitches now remain after last marker on round.
Size 6/8, 9/11 and 12/14 years:
Insert 1 marker 15 stitches apart.
All sizes:
Continue in stocking stitch and with colour medium grey, AT THE SAME TIME on first round decrease 1 stitch before every marker - read DECREASE TIP (= 6 stitches decreased).
Decrease like this every other round 4-7-6-5 times and every 4th round 7-6-7-8 times = 14-12-12-12 stitches. Work until piece measures 37-39-40-42 cm from cast-on edge.
Now work all stitches together 2 by 2 until 7-6-6-6 stitches on needle.
Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten.
Hat measures approx. 33-35-36-38 cm with 4 cm fold at the bottom.
POMPOM:
Make a pompom of approx. 5 cm in diameter with colour off white. Fasten the pompom at the top of the hat.
KNOT:
Make a knot at the top of every Santa hat in A.1. Tie the knot around a stitch. Cut 2 lengths of colour off white. approx. 10 cm. Place strands together, use a needle and pull strands through the top off white stitch so that both yarn ends are on the right side of piece, on each side of stitch. Tie a knot, then tie another knot but in the opposite direction - see figure. Cut the yarn ends approx. ½ cm long. Repeat at the top of every Santa hat in A.1.
