START THE PIECE HERE:
-------------------------------------------------------
MOUSE – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
1 mouse is worked in light grey with a pastel pink nose and 1 mouse in medium grey with a mauve nose. The tail is crocheted using black and the eyes are embroidered in black.
BODY:
Cast on 16 stitches with needle size 8 mm and light grey/medium grey Snow. Work stocking stitch back and forth – AT THE SAME TIME, on row 3, increase 8 stitches evenly spaced by working 2 stitches in every other stitch = 24 stitches. Work until the piece measures 14 cm. Now work all stitches together 2 and 2 = 12 stitches. Work 2 rows, then work 1 row with pastel pink/mauve (= nose). Cut the strand, pull it through the stitches and fasten well.
Sew the sides together, in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch. Fill with wadding, but do not overfill - there must be room for the mouse to shrink.
EARS:
Cast on 5 stitches with needle size 8 mm and light grey/medium grey Snow. Knit 4 rows. The next row is worked as follows: Knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 together = 3 stitches. Knit 2 rows, then knit the stitches together. Cut the strand and pull it through the last stitch. Work 1 more ear. Sew the ears to the mouse and sew 2 black stitches for each eye.
TAIL:
Using hook size 7 mm and black work 12 chain stitches. Start in 2nd chain stitch from hook and work 3 double crochets in each chain stitch. Cut the strand and sew the tail to the mouse.
FELTING:
The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below.
Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment.
IN WASHING MACHINE:
Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING:
Lay the piece in the washing machine, using a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme).
Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet.
IN TUMBLE DRYER:
Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING:
Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly.
