HEDGEHOG – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
Piece is worked in the round from the snout and towards the back. The head is worked with single crochets, embroider 2 eyes on the head, work the body with pouf stitches and work the behind with single crochets.
SNOUT AND HEAD:
Use hook size 3.5 MM = US E/4 and color black in DROPS Lima.
Work diagram A.1 (snout). Read COLORS above and switch to the color for head. Then continue in the round as follows: Crochet A.2 (= beginning and end of the round), work A.3. Remember to keep the crochet gauge.
When last round in A.2 and A.3 remains, change to the color for body before crocheting the last round. After last round there are 20 single crochets + 1 chain stitch on the round. Don’t cut the yarn. Embroider the eyes as explained below.
EYES:
Fasten strand from snout and head on the inside of head. Embroider 2 small eyes on the head with color black (1 eye = 1 flat stitch of approx. 4-5 MM = US 8). Embroider eyes between 4th and 5th round on head and with approx. 2 cm = ¾" between each eye - see photo.
BODY:
Continue with the color for body and crochet in the round as follows: Crochet A.4 (= beginning and end of the round), then crochet A.5 a total of 10 times around the body. When A.4 and A.5 are done in height there are 10 pouf stitches, 10 chain stitches, 10 half double crochets + 2 chain stitches at the beginning of the round. Now work the behind as explained below.
BEHIND:
Fill the hedgehog with some cotton wool, and continue to fill the piece when working.
Continue with the color of the body and crochet in the round as follows: Crochet A.6 (beginning and end of the round), and crochet A.7 a total of 2 times around the body. When A.6 and A.7 are done in height, there are 2 single crochets + 1 chain stitch at the beginning of the round.
Cut and fasten the yarn.

this round has already been worked, and it only shows how next round should be worked in stitches below |
 |
= |
1 chain stitch - If you work outermost on the hook the chain stitch will often be too tight; 1 chain stitch should be as long as 1 single/half double crochet is wide. |
 |
= |
At the beginning of the round crochet 1 chain stitch, finish the round with 1 slip stitch in this chain stitch |
 |
= |
1 single crochet in the stitch below |
 |
= |
1 single crochet in the stitch below (do not work in the chain stitches) |
 |
= |
2 single crochets in the stitch below |
 |
= |
Ear: Crochet 3 chain stitches, 1 half double crochet in the first chain stitch worked, skip 1 single crochet on head |
 |
= |
At the beginning of the round crochet 2 chain stitches, finish round with 1 slip stitch in the 2nd chain stitch at the beginning of the round |
 |
= |
1 half double crochet in the single crochet skipped |
 |
= |
1 half double crochet in the stitch below |
 |
= |
1 pouf stitch: * Make 1 yarn over, insert hook in stitch from previous round, get the yarn, pull yarn through and make strands the same length as a double crochet (= approx. 1 cm) *, work from *-* 4 times in total = 9 loops on hook, make 1 yarn over and pull yarn through all 9 loops – Note: to avoid holes in the piece when working pouf stitches, it is important that all stitches are worked through both loops on stitches from previous round |
 |
= |
Decrease 1 stitch by crocheting 2 single crochets together as follows: Work 1 single crochet in next stitch but wait with last yarn over and pull through, work 1 single crochet in next stitch but now pull last yarn over through all 3 loops on hook. |
 |
= |
Snout: Crochet 2 chain stitches, 2 single crochets in the first chain stitch worked, turn and continue working in the round. |
