Dear Cindy, to make armholes, you will crochet chain stitches and skip stitches from previous round to create a "hole" where you will crochet the sleeves from afterwards; in this video we show how to make such a armhole, You will work here another pattern but the way to make armhole will be the same: crochet chain stitches and skip stitches from previous round. Bon crochet!

Dear Natalie, for the armholes you are skipping stitches replaced by chains on both places on the round. Dear Lanie, if your tension is correct, you should have same measurements as in the chart when you have worked the 5 repeats of A.3 in total (increasing 9 ch-spaces every time you work 1st round so that you end with 90 tr-groups. To make the oval shape, lye circle flat and fold it double so that armholes are over each other, place markers to count the bottom 61 tr groups where you will work over and the 29 tr-groups towards neck you will leave now unworked. 31.12.2020 kl. 19:12:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Crystal, after the armhole you continue working in the both chains for armholes as if they weren't stitch groups skipped and at the same time you increase evenly in the round 9 dc groups, ie the 9 ch-spaces have to be increased evenly and not only in the chains for armholes. Happy crocheting!

06.08.2020 kl. 05:14:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Watson, on this round you will skip stitches evenly replaced by some chains to make a hole for the sleeves. This means you start the round with 1 dc around ch-space in the middle of dtr-group (see diagram), work 30 loose chains and skip 5 dtr-groups from previous round, work 1 dc in the middle of next dtr-group (1st st in diagram) and work A.3 (= 12 ch, 1 dc) a total of 8 times, then repeat armhole (= 30 ch, skip 5 dtr-groups) joining with 1 dc in next dtr-group and finish round with A.3 (=12 ch, 1 dc). On next round work round 2 in A.3 increasing evenly (including in the chain-spaces). Happy crocheting!

08.06.2020 kl. 09:36:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Eva, yes you should work round 2 in A.3 with 2 dc + 2 ch + 2 dc in every ch-space but to increase, you will have to work evenly spaced instead (2 dc + 2 ch + 2 dc + 2 dc + 2 ch + 2 dc) around 1 ch-space (a total of 9 times evenly distributed). Happy crocheting!

Dear Marylin, we think that a diagram is better than a written put pattern not only because we offer patterns in many languages, and symbols can be ad everywhere, but also, because a diagram not only tells you the VERY NEXT step, but also shows you how the stitches, and also how the rows relate to each other, so you can see the "big picture" too. If you have problem reading a diagram, we do have tutorials for crochet diagrams here as well as for knitting diagrams here. And you can always ask for help in person in the store you bought your DROPS yarn from.

11.12.2019 kl. 20:57:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Lori, to work the armhole, you have to skip some stitches that you will replace by some chains so that there will be a hole on each side of circle for the armholes. In size S, work the 1st row in A.3 as explained: 1 sc in the middle of tr-group, crochet 30 ch and skip the next 5 tr-groups (= this will create a "hole" for the 1st armhole), now continue working 1st row in A.3 (= 1 sc around mid of next tr-group, and work from *-* 8 times in total then crochet 2nd armhole as first one (= skip stitches and replace them by chains = 2nd hole for 2nd armhole) and finish round as in A.3. Happy crocheting!

I'm doing this in XXL and am up to the row after creating the arm holes, where I'm supposed to increase evenly by 9 to go from 36 groups to 45. You say to do 8 DC groups in each arm, so that makes 16. I then have 12 groups on the bottom of the round and 8 at the top, making 20 groups to work the extra 9 groups into - but the maths doesn't let me do that evenly. Can you please be more specific on which chains to do 2 groups into to get the 9 increases?
24.11.2019 kl. 05:05:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Sylvia, you should increase evenly including in the chains for armholes, ie you skipped 6 groups for armholes, you should calculate the number of groups with 6 over each armholes, and increase then also over armholes, so that the increases are worked evenly on the round. Happy crocheting!

Can you explain this. Its little confusing Work next round as round 2 in A.3 as follows: Work the same way as before with 2 dc + 2 ch + 2 dc around every ch-space, around every ch-space for armhole work 6-7-8 dc-groups, AT THE SAME TIME inc 9 dc-groups evenly on round, inc 1 dc-group by working 2 dc + 2 ch + 2 dc + 2 dc + 2 ch + 2 dc around 1 ch-space = 36-45-45 dc-groups.

Dear Shalini, you have to increase evenly 6-7-8 dc-groups around - see here how to increase evenly. 1 dc-group = 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc, to increase 1 dc-group you will work evenly 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc (=1 dc-group), 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc (= 1 dc-group) around same ch-space = 2 dc-groups in the same ch-space. Happy crocheting!

It was unclear that there should be 25 tr groups between them - before I got that far. I think I have to rip back to the armholes now as they seem too close to the neck. Help.
03.07.2018 kl. 00:34:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Lori, after armholes you should have 26 tr groups, then repeat A.3 while increasing 9 ch-space every time you will crochet first round in A.3 = 45 tr group, then repeat A.3 3 more times while increasing 9 ch-space every time you will work 1st round in A.3 = you will have 72 tr groups. Work now the oval shape over the bottom 47 tr groups while the top 25 tr-groups are unworked. Work now A.3 but start and end each row with A.4 and A.6 to give the oval shape. Happy crocheting!

Dear Elizabeth, when working the oval shape you work A.4 and A.5 only once, ie start with A.4 repeat A.3 and finish with A.5 from RS, and then from WS work A.5, repeat A.3 and finish with A.4. On first row you will increase 7 ch-spaces = there will be 47 + 7 = 54 ch-spaces (including the smaller ones in A.4/A.5) then the 2nd time you work A.4, A.3, A.5 inc 7 ch-spaces again = 54+7= 61 ch-spaces + the 25 ch-spaces unworked = 86 ch-spaces in total around the jacket. I've read through all instructions and comments but can't seem to figure out the oval part. As far as I can tell, I'm supposed to work A.3 twice, only using A.4 and A.5 as a way to round out the ends. And if that's the case, how does it end up with (96-95-104 tr- groups in total around incl tr-groups toward the neck)? Because even if I increase by 7, if I follow A.4 and A.5, I am decreasing at the ends and will not have that number.
18.08.2017 kl. 22:05:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Jessica, you work A.3 starting/ending the rows with A.4/A.5 inc evenly every time you work row 1 - you will finish with 86-95-104 tr groups including the tr-groups unworked on the top of piece and the tr-groups leaving unworked in A.4/A.5: let's take size S: 47 tr-groups worked on the bottom + 2x7 tr-groups inc + 25 tr-groups unworked at top of neck = a total of 86 tr-groups. Happy crocheting!

I have 2 questions. I am making this in the L/XL size. I am on the row where I am making the arm holes. So I chained 30 and it says to skip 7 dc spaces but in the picture, only 6 were skipped so (Question 1) how many do I skip? And (Question 2) How many ch 12 spaces do I make for the top and bottom? It doesn't specify and the picture doesn't match the instructions so I don't know what to follow and I don't want to guess. Thanks for your help!
16.08.2017 kl. 17:07:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Jessica, in size L/XL you will skip only 6 tr-groups, then work a total of 14 12-ch-spaces for the bottom, skip the next 6 tr-groups (2nd armhole) and finish with 12-ch-spaces to the end of round. On round 2 in A.3 you will work dc groups around as in A.3 + uner the chains inc evenly 9 dc groups so that you have 45 dc groups at the end of this round. Happy crocheting!

Deear Sandy, oh yes sorry. On this step, you will work A.4 at the beg of row from RS, repeat A.3 and finish with A.5 (from WS work: A.5, repeat A.3 and finish with A.4) - A.4 and A.5 gives nice transition for the oval shape, and inc 7 ch-spaces evenly (= as you worked before) on each round 1 in diagrams. Happy crocheting!

30.11.2016 kl. 11:34:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Sandy, while working 1st row in A.3 you will crochet armholes (skip sts and crochet chains = hole for sleeve), the work 2nd row in A.3 as explained crocheting in the chains for armholes and inc evenly and work then round 3 in A.3. Work then A.3 one more time in height inc evenly = 45-54 st groups. Then repeat A.3 3-4 more times inc 9 ch-spaces on each row 1 = 72-81-90 st groups. Happy crocheting!

I have a question on the Fall Festival Drops 171-21. I am ready to begin working the rows for the oval. Do I do the three rows of A.3 then do A.4, A.3, A5? If you do A.4, A.3, A5 twice, how do you compensate for the unworked tr-groups because you lose 2 dc groups when doing the row dc-groups of A.3. Also, after you complete the third row and turn you are now on the WS of the jacket. Are you supposed to cut the yarn to start on RS for the second set of A.3?
27.10.2016 kl. 21:52:DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Burkholder, you are working the 3 rows in A.3 a total of 2 times over a part of dc groups only, to make the beg & end of rows nicer, work from RS: A.4, then repeat A.3, and finish with A.5, from WS, work first A.5, then repeat A.4 and finish with A.4. Repeat these 2 rows until 2 repeats of A.3 have been worked in height. Happy crocheting!

Dear Sunshinee, when working 1st round in A.2 you have to inc 9 ch-spaces evenly (as you inc in the 6th row in A.1) so that you have 27 tr groups on last row in A.1 + 9 ch-spaces inc evenly on 1st row in A.2 = 36 ch-spaces at the end of row 1 in A.2. Hola Isabel.

Dear Belinda, there is no picture of the jacket flat, the oval shape is worked in rows, ie work on the stated number of sts for your size leaving the remaining sts unworked, the transition between circle (unworked sts) and A.4/A.5 will then be smooth and make a nice oval. Happy crocheting!

Dear Mrs Rees, you will find at the bottom of the pattern a measurement chart with all measurements in cm taken flat from side to side, compare these to a similar garment you have and like the shape to find out the matching size. Read more about this here and convert into inch here. Happy crocheting!

Probably idiotic.. but here goes. I plan to make this in L/XL ... do I start with A.1 and then move on to A.2, or just start with A.2? I am not too good at charts so this will be my test ... the piece is lovely.

Dear Mrs Zinden, you have to start with A.1 and then move to A.2 for size L/XL. Happy crocheting!
