I don't understand how the marker thread works or what it does in this particular pattern. Knit 1, put marker thread, then knit the rest together - this does not make the right number of stitches. 56 - 58 -1 = 55 - 57. Divided by two this does not give 28 - 29. What should the marker thread even do here? Thank you so much!

Dear Ellie, you just have to move the marker after the first stitch of the round (which is a knitted stitch), so that next round will start with P1, on this round you will work K2 together all the round, so that you will knit the 2nd stitch on left needle (= K1) together with the 1st stitch on needle (= P1) to make the decreases nicer - at the end of the round, you will work the last P stitch together with the K stitch (= the previous first stitch of the rounds). There were 56-58 sts, working K2 tog all the round will divide the number by 2 =26-29 sts remain. Happy knitting!
