The piece is worked back and forth, top down. Start with powder 28 (colour a) and hook size 4 and work according to diagram A.1.

Diagram for Clue #1

= Work 5 chain stitches and make a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch made. The black dot marks the beginning of round
= 1 chain stitch
= 1 double crochet around the chain stitch ring/chain stitch space
= 1 double treble crochet around the chain stitch/chain stitch space
= increase 1 chain stitch space around this chain stitch space by working 2 chain stitch spaces as shown in diagram

Here’s a more detailed description of how to start with Clue #1. We have marked where we are working in the diagram with red.

START: Work 5 chain stitches and make a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch made.

ROW 1: Work according to diagram A.1. Start the row at the star marked in red. Work 7 chain stitches, 1 double crochet around the chain stitch ring, 6 chain stitches, 1 double crochet around the same chain stitch ring, 6 chain stitches, 1 double crochet around the same chain stitch ring, 3 chain stitches and end row with 1 double treble crochet, turn work.


ROW 2: Work according to diagram A.1.


ROW 3: Work according to diagram A.1 (Increase 1 chain stitch space around the chain stitch space marked with a small circle on this round).


ROW 4: Work according to diagram A.1.
