Clue #4 - The sleeves

We are getting close to the end of our jumper and now it’s time to add the sleeves!

EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN:

DECREASE TIP-2 for children (sleeves):
Decrease 1 stitch on either side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. DECREASE TIP for women/men (sleeves):
Decrease 1 stitch on either side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch.

BINDING-OFF TIP:
To avoid the bind-off edge being tight you can bind off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 4th stitch at the same time as binding off; the yarn overs are bind off as normal stitches.

Shall we get started?

Children:

Place the 36-38-40-40-42-44-48 stitches from the thread on the one side of the piece on double pointed needles/short circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 42-44-46-46-48-50-54 stitches. Insert a marker thread in the middle of the 6 stitches under the sleeve. Allow the thread to follow your work onwards; it will be used when decreasing under the sleeve.

Start at the marker thread and work stockinette stitch in the round, with the main colour, for 3 cm = 1 1/8". Now decrease 2 stitches under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP-2. Decrease like this every 3-5-6-7-8-9-10 cm = 1 1/8"-2"-2 3/8"-2 3/4"-3 1/8"-3 1/2"-4" a total of 4 times = 34-36-38-38-40-42-46 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 15-20-24-26-30-34-37 cm = 6"-8"-9 1/2"-10 1/4"-11 3/4"-13 3/8"-14 1/2" from the division; There is approx. 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm = 1 1/8"-1 1/8"-1 1/8"-1 1/2"-1 1/2"-1 1/2"-1 1/2" left to finished length; try the jumper on and work to desired length. Knit 1 round where you increase 6-4-6-6-4-6-2 stitches evenly spaced = 40-40-44-44-44-48-48 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 4 MM = US 6. Work rib (knit 2, purl 2) for 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm = 1 1/8"-1 1/8"-1 1/8"-1 1/2"-1 1/2"-1 1/2"-1 1/2". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember BINDING-OFF TIP! The sleeve measures approx. 18-23-27-30-34-38-41 cm = 7"-9"-10 5/8"-11 3/4"-13 3/8"-15"-16 1/8" from the division.

Work the other sleeve in the same way.

Women:

Place the 48-52-56-64-64-66 stitches from the thread on the one side of the piece on short circular needle/double pointed needles size 5 MM = US 8 and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6-6-8-8-10-12 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 54-58-64-72-74-78 stitches. Insert a marker thread in the middle of the new stitches under the sleeve. Allow the thread to follow your work onwards; it will be used when decreasing under the sleeve.

Start at the marker thread and work stockinette stitch in the round with the main colour for 3 cm = 1 1/8". Now decrease 2 stitches under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 8-6-4-3-2½-2½ cm = 2 3/8"-1 1/2"-1 1/8"-1"-1" a total of 5-6-8-11-11-12 times = 44-46-48-50-52-54 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 38-36-36-35-34-32 cm = 14 1/4"-14 1/4"-13 3/4"-13 3/8"-12 1/2" from the division (or to desired length; there is 4 cm = 1 1/2" left to finished length. NOTE! Shorter measurements in larger sizes due to wider neck and longer yoke). Knit 1 round where you increase 4-2-4-2-4-2 stitches evenly spaced = 48-48-52-52-56-56 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 4 MM = US 6 and work rib (knit 2, purl 2) for 4 cm = 1 1/2". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember BINDING-OFF TIP! The sleeve measures approx. 42-40-40-39-38-36 cm = 15 3/4"-15 3/4"-15 1/4"-15"-14 1/4" from the division. Work the other sleeve in the same way.

Men:

Place the 52-56-64-64-66-68 stitches from the thread on the one side of the piece on short circular needle/double pointed needles size 5 MM = US 8 and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6-8-8-10-12-12 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 58-64-72-74-78-80 stitches.

Decrease like this every 6-4-3-2½-2½-2½ cm = 2 3/8"-1 1/2"-1 1/8"-1"-1"-1" a total of 6-8-11-11-12-12 times = 46-48-50-52-54-56 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 39-38-37-36-34-32 cm = 15 1/4"-15"-14 1/2"-14 1/4"-13 3/8"-12 1/2" from the division (or to desired length; there is 4 cm = 1 1/2" left to finished length. NOTE! Shorter measurements in larger sizes due to wider neck and longer yoke). Knit 1 round where you increase 2-4-2-4-2-4 stitches evenly spaced = 48-52-52-56-56-60 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 4 MM = US 6 and work rib (knit 2, purl 2) for 4 cm = 1 1/2". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember BINDING-OFF TIP! The sleeve measures approx. 43-42-41-40-38-36 cm = 17"-16 1/2"-16 1/8"-15 3/4"-15"-14 1/4" from the division.

Work the other sleeve in the same way.
