Clue #1 - The neck

Have you chosen your sweater and gotten the materials you need to get started? Then It’s time to carry on reading and start knitting the sweater with us!

Still missing materials? Here’s a list of what you need to knit the sweater !

One more thing before we start – do you know which size you’ll be making? We are working the sweater with Santas, step-by-step, following Women’s size XS (marked in bold text), with a double neck.

The sweater with Christmas trees is worked following the same pattern, the only difference are the diagrams, so just make sure you follow the right one.

SWEATER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
The neck and yoke are worked in the round with circular needle, from-mid back and top down. The yoke is divided for body and sleeves and the body is continued in the round with circular needle. The sleeves are worked with double pointed needles or short circular needle, top down.

Let’s get started!

NECK:
The neck is different in the children’s and the women’s/men’s sweater. The children’s sweater has a single neck of approx. 3 cm = 1 1/8", the women’s/men’s sweater gives you a choice between a double neck or a high neck. And you can just scroll down the page if you need help!

Children:

Cast on 60-64-64-68-68-72-76 stitches with double pointed needles / small circular needle 4 MM = US 6 and the main color. Knit 1 round. Then work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 3 cm = 1 1/8".

Women:

Cast on 95-100-105-110-115-120 stitches with short circular needle size 4 MM = US 6 and the main color. Knit 1 round. Then work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 3) for 4 cm = 1 1/2". Now decrease 1 stitch in each purled section by purling 2 together = 76-80-84-88-92-96 stitches. Continue the new rib (knit 2, purl 2) until the neck measures 12 cm = 4 3/4".

Men:

Cast on 100-105-110-115-120-130 stitches with short circular needle size 4 MM = US 6 and the main color. Knit 1 round. Then work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 3) for 4 cm = 1 1/2". Now decrease 1 stitch in each purled section by purling 2 together = 80-84-88-92-96-104 stitches. Continue the new rib (knit 2, purl 2) until the neck measures 12 cm = 4 3/4".

Dear Mrs McGoun, we use double pointed needles 20 mm - read more here ; but you can also use a circular needle to work magic loop (see this video). Happy knitting!

Hello! To test tension/gauge, do we use the larger or smaller needles? I’m just starting now but I’ll catch up! Thx!

DROPS Design answered:

Hi Jackie, you should use the larger ones for the gauge. Remember that needle size is only a suggestion. If you have too many stitches on 10 cm switch to larger needles. If you have too few stitches on 10 cm switch to smaller needles. Happy knitting!

Hallo! Anja
