How to knit a braided edge

Keywords: cable, edge,

In this DROPS video we show you how to knit a braided edge. A braided edge is worked best in the round. We first cast on an even number of stitches with 2 different colors. And then we remove the loop from the beginning of the needle and place a marker before we knit the first round. We knit the colors alternately. The next two rounds are purled and remember to work the stitches in the same color as the round below. When you purl the first round put your working yarn to the right up and over the needle, and when you purl the second round put the working yarn down to the left.

If I wanted to use this technique, say on a cowl or a lacier hat, would I cast on the specific number of stitches as the pattern states or would I need to make some changes? Thank you, such a pretty look!

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Alison, you have to cast on a number of sts divided by 2. The edge maybe a bit looser. Happy knitting!
