How to knit a spiral pattern in the round

Keywords: displaced / shifted, hat, spiral, texture,

In this DROPS video we show how to knit at spiral pattern in the round.

The number of stitches can be divided by 6 + 1. In our example we have 25 stitches.
We already casted on and knitted the first round over all stitches. The pattern starts in 2nd round. Work * K 4, P 2*, repeat *-* around. When working in the round the pattern will automatically shift 1 st to the right for each round and creates the spiral pattern.

You must read the pattern to be able to follow. You’ll find patterns using this technique by clicking on the pictures below.

The video above can be used in the following patterns

Can I do this making a hat with 2 needles as I would love to do this but I can't get on with circular needles or double pointed needles

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Mrs Hiscock, this video only applies to a circular knitting, if you work in rows you have to adjust the pattern so that the purled stitch will be displaced on the correct place. Happy knitting!

When moving the stitch by one to create the spiral in the round, do you move the end of round marker each row by one?

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Mary, if you cast on the correct number of stitches, the pattern will automatically shift 1 stitch to the right for each round; just make sure that the marker at the beg of the round follow piece, but the first stitch will not be the same on every round. Hope the video can help you better to show you how it works. Happy knitting!

How many stitches do you cast on for a man's tube scarf when you knit a spiral pattern. I also want to knit a matching hat both in DK.

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Carol, the number of stitches will depend on the pattern, as in the video you need a number of sts that can be divided by 6 + 1 - you will find another similar spiral pattern with a dk-yarn here. Happy knitting!

How would you knit the spiral pattern for a flat scarf

02.01.2022 - 07:04

DROPS Design answered:

Hi Shakira Lawrence! Just work stitches on the wrong side as they come, but move knit stitch (purl stitch on right side) 1 stitch further, so purl stitch row would go diagonally on the right side. Hope it helps!
