Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows in pattern
= 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].

Pattern: See charts (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st. The chart for Patterns 1 and 3 is identical for all sizes. The chart for Patterns 2 and 4 has arrows indicating the starting point for different sizes.

Border: Knit 7 cm [2.75"] stockinette st, P 1 row (for the folding edge - measure the work from here), 2 rows stockinette st.

Body: Cast on 216 (232-244) sts (including 1 edge st at each side at the center front kept in garter st throughout) on smaller circular needles with black and knit Border. Place a marker at each side; fronts = 52 (56-59) sts each, back = 112 (120-126) sts. Knit the next row as follows: 1 edge st, 107 (115-121) sts of Pattern 1, 107 (115-121) sts of Pattern 2 - start at the appropriate arrow, 1 edge st. After the Patterns are complete change to larger circular needles and natural. Knit stockinette st. At the same time, after the Border, inc 1 st at each side of each markers every 6 cm [2-3/8"] 3 times = 228 (244-256) sts. When the work measures 31 (31-32) cm [12.25" (12.25" - 12-5/8")] (NOTE: for Size S you will begin neck shaping on the same row -- see instructions below) knit next row as follows: 53 (57-60) sts for the front, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 114 (122-128) sts for the back, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 53 (57-60) sts for the front. Knit the rest of the front and back separately.

Front: = 53 (57-60) sts. Bind off for armholes every other row: 3 sts 2 (3-3) times, 2 sts 3 times, 1 st 2 (2-3) times. At the same time, when the work measures 31 (32-33) cm [12.25" (12-5/8" - 13")] begin neck shaping: dec 1 st at each neck edge every 4th row 2 times, every other row 13 times, every 4th row 3 times, every 6th row 2 times. Bind off when the work measures 53 (54-55) cm [20-7/8" (21.25" - 21-5/8")].

Back: = 114 (122-128) sts. Bind off for armholes as on the front = 86 (88-92) sts. When the work measures 51 (52-53) cm [20" (20.5" - 20-7/8")] bind off the center 44 (44-44) sts for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 53 (54-55) cm [20-7/8" (21.25" - 21-5/8")].

Right sleeve: Cast on 60 (60-60) sts on smaller double pointed needles with black; join and place a marker at the join. Knit Border, then 3 repeats of Pattern 1. Change to larger double pointed needles and natural and knit stockinette st to finished dimensions. After Pattern repeats are complete, inc 1 st each side of marker 17 (19-19) times:
Size S: every 4th row
Sizes M+L: every 3rd row
= 94 (98-98) sts. When the work measures 44 (42-43) cm [17.25" (16.5" - 16-7/8")] bind off 2 sts each side of marker and knit the rest back and forth on the needles. Bind off for sleeve caps at each side every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 6 (5-5) times, 1 st 6 (11-11) times, 2 sts 6 (5-5) times, 3 sts 1 time, bind off. The work measures approx. 57 (57-58) cm [22.5" (22.5" - 22-7/8")].

Left sleeve: Cast on and knit as for the right sleeve, but knit Pattern 2 instead of Pattern 1.

Assembly: Sew the shoulder seams. Pick up approx.
165-174 sts along the left front and along the neck edge to the center back on smaller circular needles with natural and knit Pattern 4 - begin the pattern at the lower front edge. After the Pattern is complete, with right side facing, knit with black: P 1 row (for the folding edge), 8 cm [3-1/8"] stockinette st, bind off. Repeat along the right front, but knit Pattern 3 instead of Pattern 4, and on the 18th row of Pattern 3 make 5 buttonholes evenly distributed over the lower 31 (32-33) cm [12.25" (12-5/8" - 13")] of the button band (up to the beginning of the neck shaping) - 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and increase 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row (make corresponding buttonholes on the facing).
Sew in the sleeves, sew the right sleeve with Pattern 1 to the right front and the left sleeve with Pattern 2 to the left front. Fold all edges over double against the wrong side and sew. Sew on the buttons.
