Gauge: 16 sts x 23 rows in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].

Crochet gauge: One flower square measures approx. 13 x 13 cm [5 1/8" x 5 1/8"]

Knitting tip: All increases take place on the right side of the work. Inc at each side of 2 center sts by means of a yarn over. This will create a row of holes at the center front and center back.

Pattern: See chart. One chart = 1 repeat. The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st.

Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows.
Garter st, when knitting in the round: *Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl.* Repeat from * - *.

Crocheted flower square:

Chain 8, join with a slip st into a ring.

Round 1: * 1 double crochet (dc) (the first dc is replaced by ch 3), ch 2 *, repeat from * - * 8 times, finish with ch 1 in the first dc.

Round 2: * 4 treble crochet (the first treble is replaced by ch 4), around the ch-space, ch 2 *, repeat from * - * 8 times, finish with ch 1 in the first treble.

Round 3: * 4 treble crochet are crocheted together (the first treble is replaced by ch 4) = keep the last loop of each treble on the hook until all treble crochet have been worked, then pull the yarn through all loops on the hook (1 treble is crocheted in each of the treble from the previous row), ch 6, 1 dc around the 2 ch sts from the previous row, ch 6, * repeat from * - * 8 times, finish with ch 1 in the first group of treble crochet.

Round 4: Ch to the center of the ch-space, ch 1, 1 sc around the ch-space, * ch 5, 1 sc around the next ch-space, ch 5, 1 dc around the next ch-space, ch 10, 1 dc around the next ch-space (= corner), ch 5, 1 sc around the next ch-space *, repeat from * - * a total of 3 times, then ch 5, 1 sc around the next ch-space, ch 5, 1 dc around the next ch-space, ch 10, 1 dc around the next ch-space (= corner), ch 5, finish with ch 1 in the first sc.

The poncho is knit in 2 parts from the neck down (front and back) and sewn together at the sides afterwards. Knit each part back and forth on circular needles.

Front: Cast on 82-90-100 sts. Place a marker at the center of the work, after 41-45-50 sts. Knit stockinette st, and at the same time, inc 1 st each side of marker every other row - see the Knitting tip -: 60-66-71 times = 202-222- 242 sts. Bind off.

Back: Knit like the front.

Assembly: Sew the side seams.

Neck edge: Pick up approx. 160-176-196 sts around the neck. Knit 1 row of stockinette st, decreasing evenly spaced across the row to 120-140-160 sts. Knit Pattern 1 for 9 cm [3.5"], then 2 rows garter stitch before binding off.
Crochet a chain approx. 100-120 cm [39-3/8" - 47.25"] long. Thread this through the top row of holes so that the tie comes at the center front.

Lower edge: Crochet 22-24-26 flower squares. Sew the squares into 2 strips with 11-12-13 squares in each strip. Sew the crocheted squares onto the bottom edge - 1 strip at each side and Sew the squares together at the corner at the center front and the center back.

Tassels: Make 26-28-30 tassels as follows: 1 tassel = cut 9 strands approx. 30 cm [11.75"] in length, fold all strands double and fasten them by pulling the ends through the loop (where the strands are folded double). Fasten 1 tassel between each square + 1 at the center front and 1 at the center back in the tips. Also fasten 1 tassel in each end of the drawstring at the neck.
