GARTER ST (back and forth on needle):
K sts on all rows.

HAT:
Worked back and forth on circular needle and sewn tog mid back when finished.
Cast on 70-74-78 sts (including 1 edge st in each side) on circular needle size 4.5 mm / US 7 with Big Delight.
Work rib as follows (1st row = RS): K 1 edge st in GARTER ST - see explanation above, K 1, * P 2 and K 2 *.
Repeat from *-* until 4 sts remain on needle, finish with P 2, K 1 and K 1 edge st in GARTER ST.
When rib measures 4-4-5 cm / 1½''-1½''-2'', change to circular needle size 5.5 mm/US 9 and K 1 row while AT THE SAME TIME dec 1-2-0 sts evenly = 69-72-78 sts.
Work in garter st back and forth until piece measures 12-13-14 cm / 4 3/4"-5"-5½".
Now insert 2 markers in the piece, 23-24-26 sts apart.
On next row from RS dec as follows: K tog the first 2 sts, work until 2 sts remain before marker and K 2 tog 2 times, repeat at next marker and K the last 2 sts tog (= 6 sts dec).
Repeat dec every other row a total of 8-9-10 times = 21-18-18 sts remain on needle.
On next row K 2 tog across.
Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts, tighten tog and fasten.
The hat measures approx. 17-19-20 cm / 6 3/4"-7½"-8" vertically.

ASSEMBLY:
Beg at the bottom of hat and sew tog inside 1 edge st along rib, then sew hat tog in outermost sts upwards along sts in garter st.


SHAWL:
Worked back and forth on circular needle. K all sts and all YOs. Cast on 9 sts on circular needle size 5.5 mm / US 9 with Big Delight. Work as follows:
Row 1 (= RS): K 1, 1 YO, K 3, 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K 3, 1 YO and K 1 = 13 sts. Insert a marker in the middle st.
Row 2 (= WS): K 1, 1 YO, K until 1 st remains, 1 YO and K 1 = 2 sts inc.
Row 3: K 1, 1 YO, K until mid st, 1 YO, K 1 (= mid st), 1 YO, K until 1 st remains, 1 YO and K 1 = 4 sts inc.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd row until piece measures approx. 20 cm / 8'' measured along mid st or until desired length.
Bind off with K from WS. Cut and fasten the threads.
