Knitting Gauge: 16 sts x 20 rows on needles size 5.5 mm with 2 threads of Alpaca in stocking sts = 10 x 10 cm.
NB: Some parts of the cardigan were knitted on a knitting machine, which on the picture gives a stripy look. When hand knitted this will disappear.
Back piece: Cast on 58-66-74-84-92 sts (inclusive of 1 seam st each side – all seam sts are knitted in garter st) on needles size 5.5 with 1 thread of Alpaca in each colour. Knit in stocking sts. Remember to check your knitting gauge! When the piece measures 12 cm inc. 1 st each side on every 7 cm a total of 3 times = 64-72-80-90-98 sts. When piece measures 31-32-33-34-35cm bind off for armhole each side on every other row as follows: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 0-1-2-3-4 times and 1 st 1-2-3-5-6 times = 56-58-60-62-64 sts. When piece measures 48-50-52-54-56 cm bind off the centre 16-18-18-20-20 sts for the collar = 20-20-21-21-22 sts left on each shoulder. Bind off when piece measures 50-52-54-56-58 cm.
Left front: Cast on 16-18-20-23-25 sts (inclusive of 1 seam sts at the side) on needles size 5.5 with 1 thread of Alpaca in each colour. Knit in stocking sts. At the same time, inc 1 st towards mid front on every row a total of 8-12-16-20-22 times and on every other row a total of 21-21-21-21-22 times. At the same time when piece measures 12 cm inc 1 st at the side on every 7 cm a total of 3 times. After all inc have been made, there are 48-54-60-67-72 sts left on needle. When all inc towards mid front have been completed (the piece now measures approx 25-27-29-31-33 cm), dec towards mid front to shape the neck line. Dec as follows: on every row 1 st 0-6-10-16-18 times, and then on every other row 1 st 24-21-19-16-15 times. At the same time, when piece measures 31-32-33-34-35 cm bind off for armhole as described for back piece. After all dec and inc have been made, there are 20-20-21-21-21 sts left on each shoulder. Bind off when piece measures 50-52-54-56-58 cm.
Right front: Knit as left front, but reverse.
Sleeve: Cast on 40-42-44-46-48 sts (inclusive of 1 seam st either side) on needles size 5.5 with 1 thread of Alpaca in each colour. Knit in stocking sts. At the same time, on 1st row inc 4 sts evenly on row = 36-38-40-42-44 sts. When sleeve measures 12-12-13-14-15 cm inc 1 sts each side on every -3.5-3-2.5-2 cm a total of 10-11-12-13-14 times = 56-60-64-68-72 sts. When sleeve measures 50-49-48-46-44 cm bind off for sleeve cap each side on every other row: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times and 1 st 0-0-1-4-6 times.
