DOMINO SQUARE:
Work each square back and forth on 2 double pointed needles, K all rows (= garter st). Insert a marker in the middle st, move the marker upward when working.
Row 1 (= from WS): K all sts.
Row 2 (= from RS): K until 1 st remains before st with marker, slip 1 st as if to K, K 2 tog, psso, K rest of row.
Repeat 1st and 2nd row, i.e. dec 2 sts in the middle of square every other row until 1 st remains (= st with marker).

GARTER ST (in the round on double pointed needles):
* P 1 round and K 1 round *, repeat from *-*.
----------------------------------------------------------

MITTEN:
First work rib at the bottom, then work 3 rows with Domino squares, finish in garter st at the top of mitten. Finally sew the mitten tog at side except for the rib which is worked in the round.

RIB:
Cast on 58 sts with Delight on double pointed needles size 2.5 mm / US 1.5 and work rib = K 1/P 1 for 10 cm / 4''.
Then K 1 round while at the same time dec 10 sts evenly = 48 sts.
P 1 round, K 1 round and P 1 round.
Continue with Domino squares.

DOMINO SQUARES:
Worked back and forth on 2 double pointed needles size 3 mm / US 2.5.

ROW 1:
1ST SQUARE: Cast on 13 sts on 1 double pointed needle size 3 mm / US 2.5 and then work the first 12 sts from the double pointed needle over the rib = 25 sts. Insert a marker in the middle st, K 1 row from WS.
Then work a thumb gusset as follows: K 2, turn and K back, K 4, turn and K back, K 6, turn and K back, K 8, turn and K back, K 10, turn and K back, K 8, turn and K back, K 6, turn and K back, K 4, turn and K back, K 2, turn and K back (= 9 ridges (1 ridge = 2 rows K) at the top for thumb gusset).
Continue with DOMINO SQUARE - see explanation above - NOTE: Beg on 2nd row as 1st row was worked before thumb gusset.
2ND SQUARE: When 1 st remains on needle from 1st square, continue as follows: Keep the one st and pick up 12 sts from RS down the left side of 1st square (i.e. pick up 1 st in every ridge), then work the next 12 sts in rib on to needle = 25 sts in total, insert a marker in the middle st and work another domino square.
Work as 2nd square until there are 4 domino squares on row, cut the thread.

ROW 2:
1ST SQUARE: Cast on 13 sts, then pick up 12 sts along the top of 1st square on 1st row (i.e. 1 st in every ridge - NOTE: Do not pick up sts in the 9 ridges over thumb gusset) = 25 sts. Knit a Domino square.
2ND SQUARE: Keep the one st from 1st square on needle, pick up 12 sts down along left side of 1st square and then pick up 12 sts at the top along 2nd square on 1st row. Knit a Domino square.
Work as 2nd square until there are 4 domino squares on row, cut the thread.

ROW 3:
1ST SQUARE: Cast on 11 sts (insert a maker in the last of the 11 sts = middle st), then pick up 12 sts along the top of 1st square on 2nd row (i.e. 1 st in every ridge) = 23 sts. Work Domino square - but at the same time on 1st row dec 2 sts evenly before marker = 21 sts.
2ND SQUARE: Keep the one st from 1st square on needle, pick up 10 sts down along left side on 1st square (insert a marker in the last of the 10 sts = middle st) and then pick up 12 sts at the top along 2nd square on 2nd row. Work Domino square - but on 1st row dec 2 sts evenly before marker = 21 sts.
Work as 2nd square until there are 4 domino squares on row, cut the thread.

The piece now measures approx. 25 cm / 9 3/4'' vertically.
Then pick up (from RS) 40 sts on double pointed needles size 3 mm / US 2.5 at the top along the last row with domino squares that was worked (i.e. 10 sts over each square). Insert a marker at beg of row and then a marker between all the squares (= 4 markers). K all rows (= garter st). AT THE SAME TIME on next row from RS, dec 1 st after every marker by K 2 tog. Repeat dec every other row 6 more times = 12 sts remain on needle.
Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog.

ASSEMBLY:
Sew mitten tog in the side in front loop of outermost st to avoid a chunky seam - sew thumb gusset towards 4th square on 1st row.

THUMB:
Worked in the round on double pointed needles size 3 mm / US 2.5.
Pick up 11 sts evenly over thumb gusset + 3 sts in the edge at the back = 14 sts. Continue with GARTER ST in the round – see explanation above. When thumb measures 5.5 cm / 2 1/4'' (adjust after 1 round P), K2 tog around = 7 sts.
Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog.

The mitten measures approx. 28 cm / 11'' vertically.
Knit another mitten.
