Knitting Tension: 15 sts x 28 rows on needles size 6 mm in garter sts = 10 x 10 cm.
Garter sts (back and forth on row): Knit all rows.
Increasing tips: Inc by making a yo on both sides of the 2 middle sts on every other row. On the returning row knit into back of yo to avoid making a hole.
Stripes: Cast on in light grey and knit 2 rows garter sts, knit 4 rows in off-white, 2 rows in light grey and finish the mitten in off-white.

Knitted back and forth on needle from mid upper hand and sewn tog afterwards – read the entire pattern before knitting it! Cast on 62 (70) sts on needle size 6 mm with light grey. Insert a marking thread on each side of the middle 2 sts. Knit garter sts and stripes as described above, at the same time inc 2 sts on every other row – see Increasing tips. After 12 (14) rows in garter sts (= 12 (14) new sts on row) knit next row as follows:
Right mitten: Knit 37 (42) sts, cast off 15 (17) sts, put 7 (8) sts on a thread (= thumb), cast off 15 (17) sts.
Left mitten: Cast off 15 (17) sts, put 7 (8) sts on a thread (= thumb), cast off 15 (17) sts, knit 37 (42) sts.
Now knit the palm of the hand (= 37 (42) sts) as follows (beg at the wrist): Knit until there are 6 (7) sts left at the top, turn the piece and knit returning row. Knit until there are 5 (6) sts left at the top, turn the piece and knit returning row. Continue like this with 1 less st left before turning until there is 1 st left at the top, turn the piece and knit returning row (= middle of the palm). Now knit until there are 2 sts left at the top, turn the piece and knit returning row. Continue like this but with 1 more st left before turning until there are 6 (7) sts at the top. Turn the piece and knit returning row. Knit 1 row over all 37 (42) sts, at the same time cast off as follows: 15 (17) sts, put 7 (8) sts on thread for thumb and cast off 15 (17) sts.

Assembly: Sew the mitten tog mid upper hand in the outer most loops to avoid a chunky seam.

Thumb: Put the 7 (8) thumb sts from both threads back on needle = 14 (16) sts. Knit garter sts, at the same time inc on each side of the middle 2 sts – see Increasing tips. At the same time knit tog the first 2 and the last 2 sts on every other row (= 14 (16) sts on every row). After 14 (16) rows in garter sts knit all sts tog 2 by 2 = 7 (8) sts. Cut the thread, pull it through remaining sts and sew tight. Sew the seam.

Crochet border: Crochet round the opening with crochet hook size 4.5 mm and 1 thread off-white as follows: 1 dc in first st, *4 ch, 1 tr in the first ch, skip approx 1 cm, 1 dc in next st*, repeat from *-* and finish with 1 sl st in the first dc from beg of round.
